Championship push

HOLYOKE – The Western Massachusetts Track and Field Championships got under way Friday night at Holyoke High’s Roberts Complex with Westfield and several other Division I schools making valiant attempts to qualify for the state championships. The Bombers appeared to capture a plethora of top five finishes, but no official results were available as of press time.

BOYS’ TENNIS
Bombers sweep
Westfield 5, Pioneer Valley Christian 0

Tristan Viale (6-0, 6-2), Shane Holloway (6-0, 6-4), and Lyle Libanan (6-3, 6-1) swept singles’ competition at Nos. 1, 2, and 3, respectively, for Westfield.
Westfield’s Jalen Bodendorf and Matt Roberts won 6-4, 6-1 at first doubles. At second doubles, Bombers’ Will Scott and Erik Unger won 6-1, 6-1.
Westfield improved to 11-2 overall.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Terriers upend Bombers
West Springfield def. Westfield 27-25, 30-28, 25-22

Eddie Loboda (14 kills), Scott Walsh (39 assists), Ryan Murray (10 kills), and Javi Santos (8 kills) led Westfield (13-3 overall, 9-1 North).

BASEBALL
Mounties top Rams
Monument Mountain 10, Southwick-Tolland 3

Bart Shea went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead Southwick-Tolland (7-10). The Rams now face a must-win situation Monday at Hampshire.

SOFTBALL
Rams pound Panthers
Southwick-Tolland 12, Palmer 2

Nikki Willey (3-for-4, double, walk, 2 runs, RBI), Britt Penland (2-for-3, walk, run, 2 RBIs), Emily Lachtara (2 runs, 2 RBIs), Tori DellaGuistina (triple, walk, 3 runs), Molly Petit (3 walks, run, 2 RBIs), and Allison Phelps (hit, run, 2 RBIs) fueled Southwick’s offensive drive.
Lachtara (4 Ks) and Willey (2 Ks) combined to shut down Palmer’s attack.

JV BASEBALL
Southwick-Tolland 24, Monument Mountain 4

Dalton Bessette went 3-for-4 and scored three runs, Zach Karetka went 2-for-2 and scored three runs. Karetka also pitched four innings, giving up no earned runs. Karetka struck out one batter.

GIRLS’ TENNIS
Frontier 4, St. Mary 1

Jessica Crosby beat the heat and her opponent Thursday, picking up St. Mary’s lone win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Frontier’s Morgan Farrick.
“The heat proved to be no problem for (Jessica),” St. Mary coach Frank Crosby said. “She dominated both sets from start to finish with snappy serves and strong forehands and backhands to win over Morgan Farrick again.”

JV BASEBALL
Palmer 11, Southwick-Tolland 2

Nick Ensign went 1-for-3 and scored a run, and Matt Tullo went 1-for-2 and also scored a run for Southwick.
