Championship Wrap

NORTHFIELD – Miguel Gonzalez (152 pounds) and Tyler Orban (195) each won their respective weight classes to help fuel Southwick’s sixth place finish at the Western Massachusetts Division 3 wrestling championships Saturday.
Monument Mountain won the championship title with 203 points. The Mounties were followed by Hampden Charter School of Science (154 points), Athol (144.5), Franklin Tech (131), and Taconic (124). Southwick was next with 121 points.
Eddie Martinez (138) also made a nice run for Southwick earning consecutive pins in three straight matches in 31 seconds, 1:32, and 1:38 before losing a very tough decision to Hampden Charter’s Gabe Johnson in the championship bout, 5-2.

Gonzalez opened with a 33 second pin of Dean Tech’s Jack Courchesne before dispatching Hampden Charter’s Ali Younes in 4:50 and defeating Mount Greylock’s Jude Rorke, 5-2. The Southwick 152-pounder then won a thrilling championship match against Taconic’s Isiah Williams, 7-6.
After earning a first-round bye, Orban pinned three straight opponents – Athol’s Ryan Hulbert (3:58), Taconic’s Tanner Hastings (2:15), and Monument’s Shamal Schoonmaker (5:00) to claim the 195-pound title.

D1 Wrestling Championships
Central dominated the Division 1 championships with 271.5 points, more than 50 ahead of second-place Putnam (214) Saturday at West Springfield High School.
West Springfield (194.5), Chicopee Comp (111), Ludlow (105), Agawam (103), Minnechaug (90.5), Longmeadow (77), Chicopee (72.5), and Westfield (61) rounded out the top 10. Northampton finished with 44 points.

D1 Boys’ Swimming Championships
Longmeadow ruled the day at the Western Massachusetts Division 1 boys’ swimming championship at Springfield College. It was not all Lancers though as Westfield rose to a second-place finish.
Longmeadow (337 points), Westfield (245), and Minnechaug (217) finished 1-3. They were followed by Monument Mountain (215), Belchertown (206), Agawam (186), Northampton (170), East Longmeadow (141), West Springfield (135), and Amherst (118).

D1 Girls’ Swimming Championships
Minnechaug claimed the Western Massachusetts Division 1 girls’ swimming championship with 308 points. Longmeadow was runner-up with 306 points, followed by Monument Mountain (219), Northampton (213), East Longmeadow (194.5), and Westfield (178.5).
