Comp knocks off WHS

CHICOPEE – For 14 regular season games, spanning 44 days, the Westfield High School boys’ volleyball team enjoyed an undefeated run. It had been nearly a year since the Bombers lost a game … until Tuesday night.
Western Massachusetts defending champion Chicopee Comp defeated Westfield in a five-set thriller in Chicopee. The Bombers, who knocked the Colts from the ranks of the unbeaten a short time ago, fell 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 28-25, 9-15.
“It was a hard-fought match that ended up not going our way,” Westfield coach Tyler Wingate said. “Comp played well and made it challenging all night with their hitting and blocking.”
Manny Golob (22 kills, 10 digs), Eric Shilyuk (42 assists), Ryan Bucko (13 kills, 3 blocks), Dmitriy Doroshenko (31 digs), and Nick Hall (8 kills, 2 blocks) contributed for Westfield.
The Bombers (14-1 overall, 8-1 North Division) will attempt to bounce back Thursday (senior) night against Agawam at WHS. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
