WESTFIELD – DPW Deputy Superintendent Casey Berube said April 3 that the refuse and recycling pickup remains on schedule, despite a truck breaking down and overheating that morning.
The City of Westfield put up a notice following the incident, notifying residents there might be delays, and asking them to make sure barrels are at the curb by 7 a.m. on the scheduled date, and to leave them there until the following day or until they are picked up.
“We’re hoping to get everything done, despite the breakdown,” Berube said, adding that it happened to one of the older trucks in the fleet.
Berube also said that the city recently purchased two new trucks, which were originally scheduled to come in January, but are now scheduled to be delivered in May,
He said currently employees are on a split shift, in order to practice social distancing parameters. He said currently two employees are out, but the city has put a priority on refuse and recycling pickup, in order to maintain a semblance of normalcy during these times.
Road construction is also going forward, with construction workers following basic safety protocols.
Berube said Root Road is scheduled to be resurfaced on April 13 by a private vendor.
“That’s the final road project for this fiscal year, to my understanding,” Berube said, unless Mayor Donald F. Humason adds another project before the end of the fiscal year. He said the fiscal year 2021 schedule has not been finalized.
Meanwhile he said to confirm that residents should keep their trash out. “We’ll get to it,” he said.
