Dona M. Kane

WESTFIELD – Dona Marie (Morrissey) Kane, 69, died Tuesday, August 28, 2012 surrounded by her family after surviving with ovarian cancer for seven years. Dona was born in Westfield on March 24, 1943, the third child of Richard and Anna (Joyce) Morrissey.
She attended Saint Mary’s Elementary and High School, and graduated from Framingham State College with a degree in home economics. After working in Filene’s, she taught in the Brookline Public Schools until she married in 1967 and moved back to Westfield. She taught at Classical High School until her first daughter’s birth, when she stayed home to raise her family. Later, Dona worked in the religious education program at St. Mary’s of Westfield and was a local real estate agent. A communicant of Saint Mary’s, she served on the board of the Cancer House of Hope and was co-chair of the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days.
Dona leaves behind her husband of 46 years, Dr. J. Vincent Kane Jr., as well as her children, Bridget Matthews-Kane and her husband Tim Matthews of Westfield, Sheilah Kane-Weiss and her husband Juan Carlos Weiss of Chappaqua, NY, Norah Kane-Daly and her husband Michael Daly of Reading, MA, and John Vincent Kane III and his wife Michele (Higgins) Kane of Franklin MA. She was predeceased by her parents but is survived by her siblings; Joyce Morrissey Donohue of Woodbridge, VA; Sr. Jane Morrissey of Springfield, MA, Anne Cressotti and her husband Frank of Southampton, MA, Richard Morrissey and his wife Pamela of West Springfield, MA, Sheila Spencer and her husband Steve of Granville, MA, and Mary Chris Cressotti and her husband Karl of Cheshire, CT. Dona also leaves behind her in-laws, Ellen (Kane) Onofrey and her husband Richard of Westfield, and Dr. Richard Kane and his wife Maureen of Westfield. Dona is also survived by her grandchildren, Fionnuala, Niamh, Declan and Deirdre Matthews; Diego and Esmeralda Weiss; Fiona and Liam Daly; and Stella and John Vincent Kane IV; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dona’s caregivers, especially Dr. Richard Penson and Laura Sullivan of Mass General Hospital in Boston, for their kind and compassionate medical care.
Family and friends will gather for the funeral on Sunday, September 2, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 30 Bartlett Street, Westfield. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be Saturday from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield.
