Dr. Stanley R. Mueller

Spring Hill, FL – Dr. Stan Mueller, 82, passed away surrounded by love on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 with his wife, Sue and their three cats beside him at his home in Spring Hill, FL.

Stan was born in Newark NJ to Chester and Gladys (nee Walz) Mueller on June 18, 1935.  He was raised in Newark and spent his summers in Seaside Park, NJ, where at a very young age he was single-handing his sailboat off Island Beach.  Sailing was his passion which he enjoyed up until a few years ago.  Every sunny summer weekend, he and Sue would be out in their catboat on Pleasant Bay in S. Orleans, MA.

Dr. Mueller graduated from Rutgers University in 1957 and received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Boston University in 1965, having interned under Morris Chafetz, MD at Massachusetts General Hospital.  He held positions at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Bedford, MA and as a visiting lecturer at Wheaton College before accepting a position in 1968 as an Associate Professor in Psychology at Westfield State College in Westfield, MA.  Along with his teaching responsibilities, he served as Director of Counseling Services and Chair of the Psychology Department.  He also consulted at Western Mass Hospital and Quarry Hill.  In 1980, he established his own private practice in Westfield which he ran until 1992 when he moved to Cape Cod to accept a position as Coordinator of Geropsychiatric Services at Cape Cod Hospital and the Cape Psych Center.

Dr. Mueller opened a private practice on Rt. 6A in Yarmouthport in 1997 to focus on patients who were concerned about signs of dementia.  He loved helping people understand what the future could hold for them with regard to Alzheimer’s Disease.  He retired in 2016, at the age of 80, after nearly 60 years in his chosen field.

Stan was always drawn to the water.  Along with sailing, he loved to fly fish, and was a strong swimmer.  He enjoyed traveling, tasting great wine, listening to the works of the great composers and was a voracious reader of history.  Over the years, he enjoyed tackling new hobbies such as tying flies, photographing landscapes, writing poetry and painting with oils.  He cherished time with his family and his dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joan Scherer and her husband, Christian Scherer.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Susan Ohsberg Mueller.  He is lovingly remembered by five children, Gregory Mueller and his wife Dana of Olympia, WA, Karen Murphy and her husband Steven of Fountainville, PA, Eileen Dryden and her husband Jeremy of Somerville, MA, William Rucki of Cape Cod and Walter Rucki and his wife Julie of Westfield, MA; eleven grandchildren, Ashley, Lucy, Samantha, Lila, Elsa, Maya, Eoin, Brian, Timothy, Leah, and Ryan; and seven nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate this wonderful life is being held Saturday, September 22, 2018, the first day of fall, his favorite season, at 11am at the First Parish Brewster Unitarian Universalist in Brewster, MA.
