WESTFIELD – It is with heavy hearts that the family of Edward “Mike” Kirby announces his passing on October 9th, 2023. Mike was born in Westfield on June 16th, 1943, to Edward and Bettina (Woodsum) Kirby. A lifelong resident of Westfield and a 1961 graduate of Westfield High School, Mike enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam from 1964 to 1968. He was the first Vietnam veteran to be installed as an officer in American Legion Post 124, where he served as Sergeant-At-Arms. Mike worked for Metler Toledo for many years before retiring in 2002.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and is survived by his wife, Jeanne (Swanson) Kirby, daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and Kevin Pratt of Holyoke, and daughter Sara Popp of Westfield. “Ahpa” also leaves behind four beloved grandchildren – Kathryn, Mackenzie, Mary-Elyse and Erin.
He is predeceased by his brother William “Bill” Kirby, sister Margaret “Margie” and brother-in-law Frank McLane, and sister Bettina “Betty” Bezo.
He leaves behind brother and sister-in-law John and Linda Kirby, brother-in-law Edward Bezo, sister Kathleen “Kathy” Kirby, and many nieces and nephews.
Mike is sitting in his favorite chair right now, flipping between a Red Sox game and the Weather Channel.
