WESTFIELD – This holiday season, Price-Rite will kick-off its annual fundraising campaign against hunger at its check-out counters.

Shoppers will have the chance to donate at least $1, $3 or $5 at check-out toward this campaign to feed the hungry. Monies collected will benefit the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts among other charities, such as the Worcester County Food Bank.

“We are proud to be able to help fight food insecurity in our local communities through our annual Check Out Hunger fundraising campaign,” said Jim Dorey, president of Price Rite Marketplace. “Thank you to our generous customers and associates whose support helps make a difference in the lives of local families in need.”

Every year, Price-Rite donates $500,000 to hunger-fighting charities. Since 2002, it has raised millions of dollars for 22 Feeding America food banks in Massachusetts. In Westfield, Price-Rite strives to make the donation process a smooth one for customers through giving opportunities available at the self-checkout counter as well as at the regular cash register.

According to Erin Blake, supervisor at Price-Rite of Westfield, the supermarket’s cashiers show an interest in the charitable giving done over the holidays. “Me and my co-workers have been having a contest to see who gets the most donations. A lot of people have been doing the $5 donation. Once, a woman bought 30 instant potatoes towards their donation. It was a lot,” Blake said.
