WESTFIELD – Batman and Robin. Mario and Luigi. Bert and Ernie.
These iconic duos have nothing on Westfield High School girls lacrosse players Lara Finnie and Emma Metcalf. Metcalf and Finnie reached 100 points apiece Thursday to lead the Bombers past the South Hadley Tigers 20-5.
“Getting my 100 points is something I’ve been waiting for since my freshman year,” said Finnie, a senior. “It’s always been a goal of mine so after I got that first shot in today I was really determined to score. It felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders because it’s such a big milestone for me.”
While Finnie entered Thursday’s contest needing just two points for a hundred, Metcalf needed seven.
“Honestly I didn’t expect seven points … but with determination and confidence I pulled through and got it,” said Metcalf, a junior.
Metcalf got things started with a goal one minute into regulation, scoring off a pass from Sydney Goyette (2 goals, 3 assists). Finnie made it 2-0 when she scooped up her own rebound and scored with 8:23 on the first quarter clock. Sixteen seconds later, Finnie took a pass from Morgan Anjos and hammered home a goal for her 100th point. The Bombers celebrated and the game ball was removed from the contest for a keepsake of the milestone.
Metcalf soon made it 4-0 when she circled the net, came around the left side, worked her way out front of the left post and struck for a goal with 5:28 remaining in the quarter.
Finnie tallied the fifth goal with 4:11 left. Two more goals from Metcalf gave Westfield an overwhelming 7-0 lead.
South Hadley responded with two straight scores before Metcalf battled for control of the ball out in front of the Tigers net, gained possession and scored in almost one swift motion. The goal came with 7:51 remaining in the half.
Metcalf did another 360 around the net like a shark circling its prey, scoring her sixth goal of the game with 4:49 left in the half. She quickly followed that up with her seventh and then assisted Gabriella Ritter for her 100th point.
“It felt good to show I love playing as a team,” Metcalf said. Just getting that 100th point as an assist felt good that I could give it to someone else to score.”
Goals from Goyette and Metcalf in the closing minutes of the first half ensured running time in the second half and ultimately a Westfield victory.
Metcalf finished with a total of 11 points against South Hadley. She had eight goals and three assists. Finnie scored five times.
It was an historic week for Westfield as head coach Paul Fenwick celebrated his 100th career victory with a 15-9 win over Granby Tuesday. Then, Fenwick saw two of his players reach their respective 100-point milestones two days later on the same day.
“In our league this is a big thing – – 100 points, 100 goals,” coach Fenwick said. “It is a great accomplishment, especially in this day and age. It’s gotten harder because of missing a year and having a shortened season. I am extremely happy for them. It was nice that they got to share the day today. It was their day.”
