First-ever Farm Run 5K in Southwick to benefit veterans

SOUTHWICK – Supporting those who served in the military is easy this summer, with two events planned July 20 to benefit veterans.

The One Call Away Foundation’s annual Bike Ride and BBQ is Saturday morning followed in the evening by the inaugural Farm Run 5k.

The 5k starts at 6 p.m. from the Rail Trail at 108 Congamond Road. Same day registration begins at 4:15 p.m. The course also ends at the starting line.

Coordinator Amy Starr said she organized the event to support Wounded Warriors’ mission to provide free services to wounded veterans. She also said she enjoys running and beer, so it was the perfect way to combine three of her passions.

Starr is partnering with the One Call Away Foundation for post-race festivities at Whalley Park. The Southwick Civic Fund is sponsoring the town fireworks display that night and activities will take place at Whalley Park throughout the afternoon including a bounce house, beer and food vendors.

“My team and I are so honored to be hosting this race event for our veteran men and women,” said Starr. “As a patriotic woman, it warms my heart to see a community band together in support of Wounded Warrior Project’s mission. Furthermore, I am beyond excited to have partnered with Southwick’s own One Call Away — the true local heroes — who have welcomed us with open arms in joining their event at Whalley Park on the 20th.”

Parking for the Farm Run is available at Red Riding Hood Café and the former Crabby Joe’s. For more information, call 413-563-4040.
