SOUTH HADLEY – The Westfield High School wrestling team has already had its fair share of gritty competitions this season. On Wednesday night, they added one more.
Westfield (1-2-1 overall) spotted South Hadley an 18-point lead but stormed back to force a hard-fought tie on the road, 36-36.
Westfield’s Kaela Brazee won her first career match, pinning Ethan White in 2:35. Cole Cannady pinned Alex Schenker in 2:45. Jonathan Ares wrestled one of the strongest wrestlers in the 138 pound weight class, and came out victorious, 17-12. Richard Jablonski won by pin over Cyrus Larivee with only one second remaining in the match. Jack Yvon (160 pounds) won a hard-fought decision, 10-4. Alexis Ares made his debut, wrestling well before falling to his opponent by pin.
Needing pins in their final two matches, Westfield’s Max Radionov pinned Andrew Danivhenko at 1:38, and Johnny Gourde (220 pounds) pinned a more-experienced Nate Zayas.
On Saturday, Westfield nearly wrestled its way into the top 10 in the Burt Burger wrestling tournament at Chicopee High School. The Bombers placed 12th with 53.5 points.
Wayland (203.5 points), Putnam (160.5), Taconic (141.5), Minnechaug (135.5), and Cambridge Rindge & Latin (133) rounded out the top five.

Red Raiders pin down Gators
Hampshire 40, Gateway 15
Gateway 106-pounder Brandon Daniels (pin, 1:15), 132-pounder Dylan Berthiaume (pin, 1:15), and 138-pounder Michael Scuderi (17-8 major decision) were the team’s lone victors against visiting Hampshire.
The Gators fell to 0-7.

HCSS topples Southwick
Hampden Charter School of Science 55, Southwick 16
Southwick’s Eddie Martinez (132) defeated HCSS’s Omar Velez 16-7, Miguel Gonzalez (152) toppled Mahmud Suleyman 6-3, Tyler Orban (170) beat Devin Messer 10-3, and Conner Stevens (182) pinned Alan Fortin in 29 seconds.
The Rams fell to 2-8.

South Hadley skated out to a 4-1 lead in the first period, and benefited from a 3-goal, 2-assist effort from Evan Sullivan at Amelia Park Ice Arena Wednesday night.
Sean Doherty scored two goals for South Hadley, and Will Hunter, Jim Mazza, and Tim Sweeney each had one.
St. Mary received one goal each from Johnathan Spear (3 assists), Reilly Siart (2 assists), Shaun Gezotis (1 assist), Kenny Bonney, and Sam LaBombard.
