SPRINGFIELD – The Gateway Regional High School baseball team got a much-needed shot in the arm with a concerted effort to cut down on mistakes, and play better all-around ball.
Gateway rebounded from an 0-5 start to hammer down win No. 1 Wednesday, defeating Putnam 18-7.
Tyler Heeter and Jayden Marge each went 4-for-5 to lead Gateway’s offensive outburst (22 hits). Heeter had a double, triple, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Marge finished with a double, three runs, one run batted in, and four stolen bases.

Gateway’s Brian Bottles went 3-for-4 with a double, walk, and two runs scored. Gators’ Josh Webster belted a triple.
Gateway pitcher Brett Turban scattered six hits, struck out seven batters, and issued two walks.
“We’ve been struggling with errors,” Gateway coach Jared Heeter said. “We’ve been making one error after another.”
Gateway committed four errors in Wednesday’s game, but the Gators rebounded by getting key outs.
“Our team is finally starting to work together, making plays,” coach Heeter said. “We’re on the right track, I hope.”

Westfield Tech rallied for one run in each of the last two innings, but fell just short on the road.

SOFTBALL
Westfield 12, Chicopee Comp 2

WESTFIELD – Westfield pitcher Hayley Moniz delivered a solid effort on the mound, and the Bombers’ bats came alive again.
Westfield clubbed 11 hits, including a blast from Brit Kowalski, en route to a 12-2 win over visiting Chicopee Comprehensive Wednesday.
Kowalski went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Moniz also delivered three hits at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, triple, RBI, and three runs scored.
Westfield’s Sam Schieppe finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, and four RBIs.
Lindsay Kiltonic (run, 2 RBIs) and Casey Almeida (walk, run) collected one hit apiece for Westfield.
On the mound, Moniz scattered three hits, struck out four batters and walked one through seven complete innings.

BOYS’ TENNIS
Bombers chomp Comp
Westfield 4, Chicopee Comp 1

Tristin Viale and Lyle Libanan won at first and third singles, respectively, for Westfield, 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1.
Westfield’s top doubles pair, Jimmy Knapik and Matt Roberts, defeated Dan Kibler and Ben Qiu, 6-4, 6-3. Bombers’ Colin Gilbert and Jaden Bodendorf defeated Jason Martin and Joe Rhoches at second doubles, 6-4, 6-1.
Shayne Hollway lost a hard-fought match at second singles, losing to Igor Kravchenko, 6-4, 7-5.
“It was a great afternoon,” Westfield coach Pete Morizio said. “It was a nice win for the Bombers.”
Westfield improved to 4-1 with the victory.

Saints top PVCA
St. Mary 3, Pioneer Valley Christian Academy 2

St. Mary’s Pat Boyle and Garrett Almeida won tiebreakers in their first and third sets to pull out a victory at first doubles. Joe Wilcox and Matt Bruno downed their opponents, 6-2, 6-3. The Saints won a forfeit at third singles.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Butler paces STM in defeat
Chicopee 16, St. Mary 3

Kayla Calaf (3 goals, 1 assist), Alexa Giec (2 goals, 2 assists), and Julia Sudol (2 goals, 2 assists) scored four points apiece to lead Chicopee, and six other Pacers scored one or more goals at home.
Aisling Butler led St. Mary with two goals. Saints’ Aynsley Davidson scored one.

LATE RESULTS
Southwick 85, Monson 51; Southwick 66, South Hadley 70

Ashley Consolini produced wins in three events – the 110 meter hurdles (16.40), the 400 hurdles (1:12.40), and the long jump (against South Hadley only, 14-3.5).
