SOUTHWICK – Seven girl scout troops will be doing their annual Christmas caroling event on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until Noon.
Girls in the troops range from kindergarten to eighth grade and will be caroling at different businesses and locations in Southwick. The locations include Mrs. Murphy’s, Blossoming Acres, as well as the elderly housing on Ahrend Circle and Depot Street. Following the caroling, the seven troops will go to the First Congregational Church, where they will have lunch, decorate gingerbread houses and play Christmas games.
According to Cheryl McCarthy Wilson, who is a unit leader for one of the Southwick girl scout troops, said that the caroling has been going on in town for at least 45 years, starting at the elderly housing. As the years went on, the caroling began to branch out to businesses in town and other locations. McCarthy Wilson likes the idea of the troops caroling at businesses.
“It gives their customers a little holiday spirit,” said McCarthy Wilson.
McCarthy Wilson added that when the girl scouts carol at the senior housing, they also make Christmas cards for the elderly and give it to them after they sing.
“They’re just so thankful that the girls come and give them a little bit of holiday cheer,” said McCarthy Wilson.
