SOUTHWICK – The Southwick High School girls’ basketball team ran into a road block Monday.
Kate Sarnacki scored a game-high 20 points, including a nine-point, third-quarter outburst to lead No. 7 Granby past visiting 10th seeded Southwick 52-26 in a West Sectional Division 3 Girls’ Basketball tournament opener Monday night.
Sarnacki made four key baskets during a six-minute stretch in the third quarter to help spur a 14-2 run, and extend Granby’s led to 22 points. Southwick (15-6) entered the second half, trailing just 26-18.
Both teams struggled to gain any offensive continuity in the first quarter. Granby (15-6) slowly established a presence in the paint, and made Southwick work for every shot down low.
Thanks to their outside game, the Southwick Rams managed to stay close in the second quarter. Ashley Shea, Makenzie Sullivan, and Brooke Waitt each made big-time 3-pointers in the quarter.
In the third quarter, Granby pulled away and put the game out of reach.
