Westfield

Update from Rep. John Velis

I want to begin by saying congratulations to all of Westfield’s students who graduated this past week! The Westfield Vocational Technical High School graduation ceremony was Wednesday, and St. Mary’s High School and Westfield High School ceremonies were held last night. These students have great futures ahead of them, and I want to wish them all the best of luck.
Westfield always has so much going on, especially in the summer months. For example, the farmer’s market at the First Church of Atonement on Court Street opened up this week, you can stop by Thursdays from 12:30-6pm. There are also several concert series during the summer, bringing some great acts to town. Stanley Park has their concerts on Sunday nights, and Amelia Park hosts concerts every Tuesday in the Garden. Westfield on Weekends also puts on great summer concerts at the green, with vendors from downtown setting up booths. All of these concerts are fun events for all ages, and I hope to see some of you there!
For those interested in learning more about Westfield’s history, there’s a lot happening on that front as well! This Sunday, the Dewey House is hosting its Spring Open House from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Stop by for a tour and learn more about this city’s roots. Another exciting development is the Westfield Whip Manufacturing Museum. It is in the beginning stages of the planning and building process, but from everything I’ve seen, it is set to be an excellent tribute to Westfield’s rich history of Whip Manufacturing.
Westfield also has some great developments with Aviation Technology that I’ve talked about recently. The school year is winding down for the students at Westfield Technical Academy, but faculty and administration are working hard to plan for the Aviation Program set to open next fall. I can’t say enough about how great this program is for the students and residents of Westfield, and the partnership with Barnes Airport will prove to make this program one of the best in the country.
On a related note, a group in Westfield is hard at work planning for the Pioneer Valley Military & Transportation Museum, Inc. My first thought was that the Air Museum is not too far from here, but in learning more about the plans for Westfield, it’s going to be much different than the Museum in Connecticut. Westfield’s Museum will have a much greater hands on approach, and it sounds like a really fun experience for all ages. The organization behind this Museum has launched their Capitol Campaign and is off to a great start. I have the exciting opportunity to be Emcee the fundraiser this Wednesday night at East Mountain Country Club from 5:30-8:30 p.m. If you want to find out more about the plans for this Museum, this fundraiser is the place to go!
As you can see, there’s a lot to do around town. I look forward to seeing many of you at the various events! As always, please contact me with concerns, questions, or issues. You can email me at [email protected] or my aide Neesha at [email protected]. Have a great weekend!
