Increased aircraft activity expected at Barnes

WESTFIELD – Increased military aircraft activity is scheduled over the city of Westfield through Thursday.
Due to operational requirements, the 104th Fighter Wing will increase its flight operations beginning today through Thursday. The increase in flight operations may be noticeable to the surrounding communities.
The Wing does not want to alarm the residents around the local area who may be startled by events that are in addition to our normal flying activities, and every effort will be made to keep the disturbance to a minimum.
In order to protect the Northeast airspace, our unit occasionally needs to increase its operational tempo. In order to maintain proficiency in our mission, additional flights and regular training missions are integral to maintaining the highest degree of readiness.
The 104th Fighter Wing is equipped with the F-15 Eagle. One mission of the 104th is Aerospace Control Alert (ACA), providing armed fighters ready to scramble in a moment’s notice to protect the Northeast from any airborne threat. The unit is responsible for protecting a quarter of the nation’s population and one third of the Gross Domestic Product.
