James P. McCarthy

SAN MARCOS, TX – James P. McCarthy was born in Westfield, MA to Richard “Doc” McCarthy and Marion Easton on December 7, 1926. He died peacefully December 27, 2012 in San Marcos, Texas. In 1952 he married Alice Mary O’Donnell of Holyoke, MA, and in 1954 became father to Alice Ellen McCarthy Lochman of San Marcos.
The youngest of five, he survived his mother’s death at the age of two and was reared by his father and aunts, Kate and Nell. Injured in automobile accident in 1942, he completed his education in Westfield and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He served in the Pacific during World War II and in 1952 married, working for abrasives companies in the Northeast before moving with his wife to Canton, Ohio. There he founded and managed the Easton McCarthy Company, an abrasives manufacturing and distributing business. Longtime member of the Canton Club and St. Peter’s Catholic parish, he was also a fifty-year member of Oakwood Country Club. In 2010, Alice Mary, his wife of 58 years, died, and in 2012 he moved to San Marcos.
Preceded in death by his wife and brothers, Richard, David, and Daniel, he is survived by sister, Marion McCarthy Dolan of Holyoke, MA; daughter, Alice Ellen (wife of Daniel Lochman); grandsons, Michael (husband of Kelly Jones Lochman), Matthew, and Nicholas Lochman; great granddaughter, Ivy Alice and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass is scheduled at 1:00 p.m. on January 10, 2013, at the Texas State University H.L. Grant Catholic Student Center, St. Jude’s Chapel in San Marcos.The family wishes to thank for their care physicians and staff at the Central Texas Medical Center and staff at the Mariposa senior’s community.
