Jeanette I. Griffin

Jeanette Irene (Kandel) Griffin, age 89, died at Governor’s Center in Westfield on Friday, July 13, 2018. Jeanette was born on April 28, 1929 in Westfield, Massachusetts to Paul Kandel and Caroline (Krieger) Kandel of Westfield, originally from Germany. She attended Westfield Schools and was a graduate of Westfield High School. A lifelong resident of Westfield, Jeanette worked for Edwards Food Warehouse in Westfield until her retirement in 1989.  She was a confirmed member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Westfield. Jeanette was lovingly known as ‘Tatie’ by family and friends, a nickname given to her by her grandson many years ago. Her favorite pastime was baking and she will always be remembered for her famous Blueberry Cake.  Her second hobby was gardening and she was very proud of her landscaping and flowers. She was appreciated most for her sense of humor and her wisdom that she lovingly shared during good times and bad. She will be especially remembered for her willingness to help others and her ability to find the silver lining in any situation.  She was a great mentor to both family and friends and her wisdom will continue to live on through those she helped. She leaves behind a daughter, Donna L. (Robbins) St. Jean and her husband, Tom St. Jean of Westfield; Two grandchildren and their spouses, Erik Schnopp and his wife Heather, and Brianne Sarabaez and her husband, Fred. In addition she leaves four great-grandchildren who were the light of her life:  Cameron and Darrin Schnopp, and Nathan and Nyah Sarabaez, all living in Westfield. She was predeceased by her parents, Paul and Caroline Kandel and her brothers, John Kandel of Chicago, Illinois and Edward Kandel of Westfield. A service will be held at Noon on Saturday, July 21st at St. John’s Lutheran Church located at 60 Broad Street in Westfield. Relatives and friends are welcome for visitation at 11:00 AM, prior to the church service. Burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery on Lockhouse Road in Westfield following the service.
