Is it normal procedure, that on Fridays, leftover food at the Senior Center is thrown away, rather than being given or sold to the seniors that are there? The Westfield News reached out to Tina Gorman at the Senior Center and received the following response: Very little food is “thrown away” at the Senior Center.  Typically, we sell ‘extra meals’ so those who have signed up.  However, Fridays can be tricky because selling the extra meals requires both staff and time.  My Activities Aide, who assists with the distribution of ‘extra meals,’ does not work on Fridays AND we have a very small window of time to clean up after lunch and get set up for Bingo.  Therefore, the kitchen staff has become adept at preparing very close to the amount of food needed for a typical Friday lunch without an abundance left over.  In addition, food not served is generally frozen for future use.  As always, I would encourage any Senior Center participant who has a question or suggestion about our policies to contact a Council On Aging staff member directly.

I read with interest the article on a petition to rescind the water bond. While I find it commendable for people to be involved, don’t they realize a few things: 1) there is no pure water source on planet earth. Period. Every chemist will tell you so. 2) the plan the city has put forward is a well researched plan that is, not only cost effective but will get our wells back on line so we don’t have to rely on other communities for water 3) EPA guidelines change if we get water from another community. We would no longer be self sufficient which means our daily allowable usage would be cut dramatically meaning we would be in a water restriction permanently. Permanently. 4) the homes that had above acceptable levels of PFOA’s now have levels that are undetectable with the carbon filters. Let me say that again…those homes have UNDETECTABLE levels on carbon filters. 5) scientific abilities will continue to advance and what is today considered acceptable may one day many years from now, not be. However, we must move forward on the data we have now. 6) did you petition signers see how much more it will cost residents to stop this and go in a different direction? For those of you complaining about city expenses, wake up! Lastly, I’d be interested to see if any of those petition organizers were even at any of the meetings to discuss this or are they just getting their (mis)information from social media.
