WESTFIELD – Superintendent of Schools Stefan Czaporowski has announced that Jill Phelan is the new principal of Highland Elementary School.
Phelan, who lives in Southampton, has served as interim principal at Highland since September 2019. Previously, she served the school as assistant principal for three years.
Before coming to Westfield Public Schools in 2016, Phelan was a grade two teacher in Chicopee for 11 years and a kindergarten teacher in Springfield for four years. She has an undergraduate degree from Western New England College in psychology and a master’s degree from Springfield College in early childhood education.
“I am excited and honored to be able to continue in the role as principal of Highland school. I look forward to working with the staff, students and families to provide the best learning experiences possible,” Phelan said.
Czaporowski said the process included input from community members, School Committee, parents, staff and district administrators. “We received a lot of feedback, which overwhelmingly supported Jill as principal,” he said.
Czaporowski informed staff at Highland at the start of the day on Feb. 24. Phelan will begin her new contract with the district on July 1.
