12:27 a.m.: suspicious persons, Elm Street, a patrol office reports he observed two male parties at Park Square who were looking through refuse barrels for scrap metal, the officer noted that the vehicle the men were associated with was loaded with metal the owner said he collected on Falcon Drive, the men were identified and sent on their way;
12:40 a.m.: moot vehicle, violation, Springfield Road, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop, the operator’s license was found to be suspended and a criminal complaint was filed, a passenger with a valid license took control of the vehicle;
12:48 a.m.: suspicious vehicle, East Main Street, a patrol officer reports a suspicious vehicle, the officer reports he found the car unlocked with the keys in the ignition, the officer spoke with the owner who said the car had broken down, the officer secured the vehicle and the keys were transported to the station for pickup by the owner;
12:59 a.m.: vandalism, Heritage Lane, a resident came to the station to report that a window was broken by a rock thrown at it, the responding officer reports the caller’s husband said that the window was not damaged and he does not require a formal report;
1:53 a.m.: accident, Western Avenue, a Westfield State University police officer reports a single vehicle crash across the street from the campus, the responding officer reports the operator said that he lost control of his vehicle when he drove into a puddle and subsequently struck a utility pole, the officer reports the man appeared to be intoxicated and failed a field sobriety test, Nathaniel R. Gogal, 34, of 934 Western Ave., was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation;
8:10 a.m.: larceny, North Elm a caller from a North Elm Street gas station reports a known customer pumped fuel valued at more than $55 and left without making payment, the officer reports that he was unable to elicit a response at the suspect’s door or by phone and a criminal complaint was filed, the officer reports that when he finally made contact with suspect about noon he advised her that a criminal complaint had been filed when he was unable to speak with her promptly;
9:00 a.m.: arrest, Westfield Police Department, a detective reports the arrest of Colin J. Hannifan, 18, of 28 Hancock Street on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (a BB gun), armed robber and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (a shod foot), see story in the Thursday edition of The Westfield News;
11:26 a.m.: vandalism, Powder Mill Village, a resident came to the station to complain that his car was vandalized, the responding officer reports the vehicle had been keyed;
2:06 p.m.: larceny, Heritage Lane, a caller reports a turtle was found to have been stolen from a backyard pond, the responding officer reports that he spoke with adult children at the home who did not know that police had been called but said that the missing turtle may be part of ongoing harassment issues, the officer reports the resident’s sons said they would consult their father to see if he wants to pursue a formal report;
3:42 p.m.: animal complaint, Southampton Road, the director of animal control operations reports he was summoned to assist in the removal of a raccoon from a refuse container, the director reports the animal was freed and left the area;
6:56 p.m.: breaking and entering, The Willows Apartments, 19 Lockhouse Road, a caller reports her house was broken into but she does not know if anything was stolen, the responding officer reports the woman said that she found her windows open and it looks as if someone made forcible entry to a neighbor’s house also;
10:37 p.m.: disturbance, Fox Hill Drive, a call reports a neighbor asked him to call police because she was beaten by her husband, the responding office reports the woman said that during an argument her husband grabbed her by her neck and threw her against the wall, she said that the man told her not to call police, the officer spoke with the suspect who admitted that he had assaulted his wife, David G. Gauthier, 43, of 25 Fox Hill Drive, was arrested for assault and battery in a domestic relationship and for intimidating a witness;
11:03 p.m.: trespassing, Sadie Know Playground, 50 Prospect Street, a community policing officer reports he observed a vehicle parked at the playground and a marked unit was summoned to assist his search of the playground, the CP officer reports he found a teenaged boy and two girls in a dugout and the girls fled his approach, the girls were detained by the other officer, the boy was found to be in possession of alcohol and a city ordinance violation citation was issued, the mother of one of the girls came to take custody of her daughter and the other was provided a courtesy transport to her home.
