2:57 a.m.: assault, Meadow Street, a clerk reports a male party was assaulted in the area of the dike by persons camped out by the river, the responding officer reports a female party said that her boyfriend had been assaulted but had left to return to his Southampton home, the officer reports the man was found on Friendly Way and said that a person known to him by his first name had punched the back of his head, the officer noted signs of minor injury, a search of the area did not yield a suspect;
10:05 a.m.: harassment, West Glen Drive, a caller reports his girlfriend told her husband of their affair and he has since started receiving insulting text messages from the man, the responding officer reports the caller asks for no action in an effort to avoid inflaming the situation but wants the situation documented;
10:55 a.m.: annoying phone calls, Laurel Avenue, a residence came to the station to complain of annoying phone calls from his former wife and her current boyfriend, the responding officer reports that the caller said that many of the calls are complaints regarding the upbringing of children the former couple have in common, the complainant was advised to resolve the issues about the children in probate court and the suspect was advised she would face criminal charges if the annoying calls continue;
12:21 p.m.: harassment, Feeding Hill Road, a resident came to the station to report harassment by a known party, the responding officer reports a 15-year-old girl met a 15-year-old boy online and an Internet friendship developed but after the children met in person the girl decided to terminate the relationship, since then the girl has been receiving insulting and harassing text messages from the boy, the case was referred to the detective bureau where the investigating detective reports that he spoke with the boy’s father and arranged to meet with him and his son;
4:45 p.m.: fire, Conner Avenue, a community policing officer reports he smelled smoke and investigated to find a resident with a bonfire, a routine check revealed that the resident was the subject of an outstanding warrant, Mark A. Nikiel, 38, of 8 Conner Ave., was arrested on the warrant;
5:04 p.m.: arrest, Westfield Police Department, a resident came to the station in response to a message left when an officer was unable to find the resident at home to accept paperwork, a routine check revealed that the man was the subject of three outstanding warrants, Randall Shawn McFarlane, 33, of 10 Washington St., was arrested on the three warrants;
5:28 p.m.: illegal dumping, a patrol officer reports illegal dumping, the officer reports he observed a pickup truck bypass a gate posted “no dumping police take notice” and the operator unloaded his truck which contained dirt and sand, the officer reports he required the man to reload the material into his truck and a citation was issued for trespass with a motor vehicle;
6:28 p.m.: assist citizen, Elm Street, a caller reports she locked herself out of her home, the responding firefighters report entry was made;
9:03 p.m.: disturbance, Phelps Avenue, a caller reports a fight in progress involving 4-6 persons, the responding officer reports he encountered a crying woman who said that her baby’s father punched her face and made threats against her life, the officer noted a large bruise on the woman’s face, the officer reports that the suspect evaded questions when asked for his account of the incident, Jhamal Luis Cruz, 22, of 221 Bay St., Springfield, was arrested for assault and battery in a domestic relationship and for threatening to commit a crime;
10:58 p.m.: traffic complaint, Elm Street at School Street, a patrol officer reports he was advised that a tractor-trailer unit struck and damaged a flower pot at Park Square, the supervisory officer reports he found that the large planter had been dragged by the semi-truck from its location at the intersection of Elm and School streets to a Broad Street driveway but remained upright, neither the pot nor the flowers it contained were damaged, the flower pot was coned off and the DPW was advised to return the pot to the Green, a search for the offending truck did not yield results, see 7:43 a.m. entry Wednesday.
