WESTFIELD – McDonald’s East Main Street had a record of just 1-4 against Sons of Erin this season in Babe Ruth baseball action. Make it two.
Craig Lacey dished out 13 strikeouts, pitching a one-hitter to lead McDonald’s past Sons 1-0 late Tuesday night in a City Cup playoff game. Nate Barnes scored the game-winner early in the second inning on Casey McKenzie’s bases-loaded walk.
Barnes and Jake Hough started the second, reaching on consecutive one-out walks. Matt Plasse singled with two outs to load the bases. McKenzie walked to make it 1-0, and Sons’ pitcher Tim Kelleher induced a ground-out to limit the damage.
Kelleher, Brent Houle, and Colin Dunn pitched two innings apiece for Sons, and Matt Irzyk closed out the seventh. They managed to get out of jams and keep Sons close throughout.
Cam Robitaille had the lone hit for Sons, roping a liner to right field in the fourth. He stole second, but was stranded when Lacey struck out the next batter to end the inning.
“It felt like we had a bigger lead,” Lacey said. “It’s great because we only beat them once all season. It’s definitely a big win for us today. We started hitting, finally.”
