AUBURNDALE, FLA. – Junior Nick Cunningham turned in a strong pitching performance for Westfield State, but Wheaton College rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to top Westfield, 5-2 on Monday.
Cunningham threw eight innings allowing two runs (one earned) and fanned three, leaving the game with a 1-run lead.
Westfield had jumped on top 1-0 in the second inning with an RBI sacrifice fly from Dan Whigham, and padded that lead with Danny DiMatteo RBI single in the sixth.
The Lyons got one run back in the sixth, but tallied four times in the decisive ninth inning, the big blow a 2-run double from Josh Lajoie.
Westfield State falls to 1-4 on the spring trip, while Wheaton improves to 4-1.
Westfield returns to action tomorrow facing Suffolk (MA) University in a single nine-inning game at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla. At 9:30 a.m. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
