Maureen T. Sweeney

West Springfield – Maureen Theresa Sweeney, 83, (1934-2018) of West Springfield, MA passed away on April 18, 2018 surrounded by her family.  Beloved wife of Lawrence (Larry) A. Sweeney, Maureen was born in Westfield, MA on November 26, 1934, the daughter of the late Thomas O. and Kathryn Cavanaugh. Maureen, known as “Moe” to friends and family, loved gardening, refinishing furniture, looking for treasures at antique shows, and making frequent trips to Maine with her husband and best friend, Larry. Although humble about her talents, Maureen was a gifted painter, and she studied various forms of painting with local artists.  Always with an artsy and creative flair, Maureen pursued a variety of other hobbies, including baking specialty pies and creating Persian-styled rugs. Maureen enjoyed golfing, especially in the company of her father Thomas.  She delighted in visiting her sister Margaret in Boston, where she could shop and explore the city. She loved taking art and history courses at Westfield State University.  Maureen was an extremely proud “Gram” to her two grandsons, Michael and Mark.  Professionally, Maureen worked as an office manager for two doctors and held other positions in the medical field. Maureen’s family would like to thank the kind and compassionate staff of Unit 3 at Wingate of West Springfield, MA for the outstanding care that she received since 2012.  They treated her like a family member.  Special thanks also to Beacon Hospice of Springfield, MA for their comfort and support during her final days. Besides her dear husband Larry of almost sixty years, Maureen is survived by her daughter Kathleen A. Sweeney and her partner Linda Ho of Wethersfield, CT and by her son Kevin M. Sweeney and his wife Dr. Karen E. Marsian of East Longmeadow, MA, along with their sons Michael M. Sweeney of Sunderland, MA and Mark M. Sweeney of Savannah, GA.  She also leaves behind her loving sister Margaret A. Cavanaugh of Westfield, MA. Her family will receive relatives and friends at the Firtion Adams Funeral Home, 76 Broad Street in Westfield, MA on Sunday, April 22, 2018 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. with a memorial service and celebration of Maureen’s life at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.  Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.Donations in memory of Maureen can be made to the Dakin Humane Society in Springfield, MA or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
