WESTFIELD – First-quarter report cards are in, and the Westfield High School softball team has earned an A.
Westfield improved to 5-0 with a 7-0 shutout of visiting South Hadley on Wednesday. Bombers’ junior pitcher Jen Moller earned the win in her season debut on the mound.
Moller scattered three hits, struck out four batters, and walked two in a complete game effort. She joins fellow starting pitchers Sarah McNerney (2-0) and Kate Menard (2-0) in the win column.
“I was a little nervous, but pretty confident,” said Moller, who mixed up her fastballs with an occasional change-up. “I definitely had to work the plate and stay low.”
Said Westfield coach Joe Stella: “Jen did a nice job for her first time. And our defense is playing great.”
Westfield committed just one error against South Hadley.
The Bombers offense was equally effective with run support from Jules Sharon (single, triple), Maddy Atkocaitis (2-for-3, walk), Kate Puza (double, 2 walks), and Syd Ezold (2-for-3, double).
“We are all really close and trust each other,” Moller said. “It helps to keep our team together.”
Westfield will next team up to take on the Blue Devils in Northampton Friday at 4 p.m.
