WESTFIELD – Freshman Joseph Napoli (Deer Park, NY) scored a pair of goals to lead Westfield State University as the Posted a 5-3 MASCAC ice hockey win over Framingham State on Saturday evening.
Westfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period on a nifty shorthanded goal by Dalton Jay (Hamilton, Ont.) who went to the back hand to score, and Napoli’s first goal of the day.
Plagued by frequent trips to the penalty box in the second period, Westfield went down 3-2 after a natural hat trick by Framingham’s Keith Barnaby (Leominster, Mass.) in a span of 9:35 to start the second period. Barnaby tallied 26 seconds into the second on the power play, added another power play goal 2:24 later, and then redirected a shot at the 10:01 mark of the period to complete the trick.
Westfield pounded Framingham State with shots all night. Finally the Owls got the tying goal win Napoli scoring off assists from Johnny Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.) and Tyler Scearbo (Revere, Mass.) at the 16:55 mark of the second.
The Owls got the game-winner from another freshman, Aaron Clancy (Catholic Memorial/Quincy, Mass.) who fired in a rebound of a Roman Pfennings (Grefath, Ger.)shot 6:57 into the third. Westfield got some breathing room when Cory Wilson (Maitland, Ont.) flipped a loose puck through traffic and beat Framingham netminder Adam Calabrese (Philadelphia, PA) to the short side at the 10:18 mark.
The Rams pulled Calabrese for the final 30 seconds in a last-ditch attempt to rally. Westfield’s Napoli had a long shot at the empty next slide just wide as the horn sounded to deny his attempt at a hat trick.
Jonathan LoParco (Vaughn, Ont.) made 33 saves for Westfield in picking up the win. Calabrese withstood 56 shots from Westfield, making 51 saves on the night.
Westfield improves to 5-1 with the the win, 4-1 in the MASCAC. Framingham falls to 2-4, 1-3 in the MASCAC.
