New nature club will put some ‘spring’ in your step

WESTFIELD-With spring just days away, the urge to once again start walking and exploring our region will be upon us, and two local residents are hopeful their new initiative will be a catalyst for those who enjoy exercise and meeting new people.

Nick Niedzielski is the founder of the Westfield Nature Club, and is assisted by Nicole Lussier. At press time, more than 60 area residents have joined the club which was announced on Facebook in late February.

“I wanted to start an active and positive fun group for Westfield,” said Niedzielski, adding, “I heard many people say they love to walk so I worked off of that and started the club.”

Lussier shared a similar sentiment.

“Nick enjoys meeting new people,” said Lussier. “He is a friendly, outgoing person and wants to meet new people while doing something he loves – walking in nature.”

Lussier added she was eager to help Niedzielski start the club to help him “fulfill this wish he has.”

Niedzielski and Lussier will launch the club during its first gathering on April 14 – weather permitting – from 1:30 to 3:30 at Stanley Park. Participants are asked to gather by the bathrooms near the playground.

“We will walk around Stanley Park,” said Niedzielski, noting the “family and all-age friendly” walk is open to everyone. “After the walk we will ask for suggestions for future walks and hikes.”

While neither Niedzielski or Lussier are seasoned hikers, they are “eager to learn” from others who participate in the group setting. They also reminded participants to wear appropriate footwear and dress for the weather. In the event of inclement weather, Niedzielski will post a notice on Facebook on the status of the walk.

“The best way to enjoy your life is to do what you love and learn from others as you go,” said Niedzielski. “These hikes are geared for all ages, families, singles, dogs on leashes, anyone!”

Lussier concurred.

“It will be fun to meet other people from our community,” said Lussier. “We can all learn from each other about the history of Westfield and fun and exciting places to visit close to home.”

As the club begins to form, Niedzielski expects the gatherings to take place once a month.

“We also want to walk the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail, Westfield’s downtown, Westfield State University’s campus, and other places that our group decides,” said Niedzielski, adding, “We are open to all places in Westfield. We would love suggestions.”
