Next school calendar draft approved

SOUTHWICK – The Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School Committee approved a draft of the 2016-2017 school calendar last night after making one change.
Superintendent John Barry brought up the scheduled half-day on April 14, 2017, which is Good Friday.
“We have it for a half-day, but it’s a holiday for a lot of people so I’m wondering about attendance,” Barry said.
Barry said he has been approached by several people questioning having school at all that day.
“I’m leaning toward not having school,” he said.
The committee agreed unanimously.
The 2016-2017 school year is set to begin Sept. 1 for students in grades one-12, with preschool and kindergarten starting Sept. 3.
Staff returns to school Aug. 29 and has professional development Aug. 30 and 31.
The holiday vacation is scheduled for Dec. 24-Jan. 2, and the February break is Feb, 20-24. April break follows Easter, which is another reason Barry said he wanted to give Good Friday off.
“I think a lot of people may be traveling at that time,” he said.
The last day of school without any snow days is June 13, and with five snow days is set for June 20.
