SALEM – Brodie Keene (Feeding Hills, MA) scored in the 65th minute and Alex Kraver (West Springfield, MA) recorded a shutout as Westfield State opened up Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 1-0 victory over Salem State at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. The Owls notch their first win of the season and improve to 1-5-1, 1-0, while the Vikings remain winless at 0-5, 0-1.
Keene took a pass from Connor Gilbert (Melrose, MA) and rifled in a shot from 10 yards out that beat a diving Greg Enos (Peabody, MA) for the game’s only score.
Westfield State had two prime scoring chances in the first half, as Keene sent a shot just over the cross bar from three yards out just over twenty one minutes into the game. Matt Erickson (Norton, MA) nearly scored at the 23 minute mark when his header just missed off a corner attempt.
Salem State’s best opportunity to score came in the second half when Caleb Gomes (Nantucket, MA) took a penalty kick, but Karver snared the shot, diving to his left to keep the game scoreless.
Keene, three saves, made a key stop at the end to keep the Vikings at bay as Westfield State held on for the 1-0 victory.
Enos recorded a save in net for the Vikings, which were outshot 9-7 for the game.
Salem State travels to UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, September 22nd for a 7:00pm match while Westfield State hosts Fitchburg State on Saturday, September 26th at noon. – Story courtesy Salem State Sports info
