Owls Outscore Union in Championships, 79-75

SCHENECTADY, NY – Westfield State University’s sophomore guard Peter Mafo (Lynn, Mass. / Lynn Classical) and sophomore guard Moody Bey (Springfield, Mass. / Monson) both scored 16 points consecutively to lead the Owls to a 79-75 victory over Union College in the championship game of the 2017 Sig Makofski Invitational on Sunday night at the Viniar Athletic Center.
Westfield State improves to 4-2 on the season while Union College is now 2-1 overall.
Union jumped out to a seven-point lead early in the first half, but Westfield State battled back to go into halftime with the game locked up at 40-all.

The second half saw the Owls get into foul trouble early, sending Union to the free-throw line 25 times. Despite Union earning 30 points off free throws, the Dutchmen still left 14 points unaccounted for from the charity stripe.
Union was able to use the free buckets to take a 75-74 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the game. However, Westfield State’s Mafo hit a three pointer with 26 seconds left to put the Owls back up by two.
The Dutchmen were unable to make a basket on the two ensuing possessions and freshman guard Ty Sands (Waterbury, Conn. / Kennedy) hit two free throws with one second remaining to seal the 79-75 win for the Owls.
In addition to Bey’s 16 points, the sophomore guard also had four steals for the Owls while senior teammate Allister Williams (Boston, Mass. / Bedford) contributed 15 points, four steals and a block in the win.
Kevin Weckworth had a strong outing for Union, as he led all players with 27 points, hitting four treys and going 9-for-10 at the free-throw line. Greg King was second on the Dutchmen with 19 points and earned his first double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.
Westfield State host Elms College on Thursday, November 30th in a non-conference match starting at 7:00 p.m.
