WESTFIELD – The Whip City’s American Legion Baseball team is about to go above and beyond.
Westfield Post 124 posted a hard-fought 3-2 win over East Longmeadow Thursday night at Bullens Field. They improved to 2-2-1 overall and are now just one win away from going above .500 on the season.
“Hopefully (this) will lead to better things and we will keep going (forward),” Westfield Post 124 manager Don Irzyk said.
Westfield Post 124 opened the game with an early double steal that resulted in the team’s first run and a Jack Blake sac-fly for a 2-0 lead.
Westfield pitcher Colin Scanlon was cruising until an injury forced him from the game during the sixth inning. With the score tied 2-all, Tanner Koziol, in relief duty, worked out of a jam with two runners in scoring position.
Westfield scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Josh Lis singled. Jack Lamirande moved the base runner over with a sac-bunt. Then, Anthony Piquette hit the go-ahead RBI hit on a single to center field.
“It was a good win especially after a tough loss last night,” said Irzyk, whose team blew a 4-2 lead against Northampton. The Blue Devils scored three unanswered runs to defeat Westfield 5-4.
Post 124 returns to action Thursday against Wilbraham Blue at Spec Pond in Wilbraham. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
