Friday, April 5, 2013
12:02 a.m.: breaking and entering, Miller Street, a caller reports her home was broken into between 6-10 p.m., the responding officer reports the back door had been forcibly opened and a wide variety of property including electronics and credit cards had been stolen;
1:40 a.m.: suspicious activity, Otis Street, detectives report that while investigating an unrelated matter they discovered that the former owner of an Otis Street house was still residing in the house and had managed to bypass the electrical meter to steal electricity, the G&E was notified;
4:52 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Sunset Drive, a patrol officer reports that he observed an approaching vehicle operating on the wrong side of the roadway, the officer reports he stopped his cruiser but the vehicle continued, the officer reports that the vehicle approached so closely that he activated his cruiser’s takedown lights and siren to alert the operator and then discovered that the operator was delivering a newspaper to a mail box immediately adjacent to the cruiser, the officer reports the operator was advised of her infraction and instructed to stay on the appropriate side of the road;
10:07 a.m.: found property, Riverdale Street, West Springfield, West Springfield police delivered to the station a pistol left by a city resident at a West Side restaurant, see story in the Tuesday edition of The Westfield News;
2:44 p.m.: larceny, Prospect Street, a caller reports coming home to find property had been stolen, the responding officer reports the caller said that she believes the residence had been locked up when she left but when she came home she found her jewelry box had been emptied;
2:45 p.m.: larceny, North Elm Street, a resident came to the station to report her debit cards were stolen, the responding officer reports the woman said that her husband had made unauthorized withdrawals involving substantial sums from her bank account, a supervisory officer points out that because of community property laws it is impossible for a husband to steal from his wife,
3:42 p.m.: found property, Meadow Street, a caller reports an unknown bicycle has been in her back yard for three days, the bike was transported to the station for safekeeping;
4:17 p.m.: vandalism, Apple Blossom Lane, a caller reports that in February children poked holes in the liner of his pool, the responding officer reports the caller does not have an specific suspect and does not require a formal report;
5:00 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Meadow Street at Mechanic Street, a patrol officer requests a tow for a vehicle found to have expired and non-renewable registration, the vehicle was towed;
5:37 p.m.: fire, Avery Street, a caller reports college aged neighbors have a bon fire which may be too big, the responding fire captain reports that after he spoke with the tenants they decided to extinguish their fire;
6:36 p.m.: arrest, Meadow Street, a detective reports that his investigation into a larceny from a building led him to a residence where a suspect formerly lived, the detective reports that when he spoke with the landlord she said that the suspect no longer lived there but when the detective told her that the woman had been seen entering the house they checked the putatively vacant apartment to find the suspect and her husband asleep in bed, the woman was found to be in possession of property stolen from a burglary at a Main Street residence including credit cards which had been used shortly after the burglary, Yelena Kostyushko, 27, of 177 Meadow St., was arrested for breaking and entering a building in the daytime with intent to commit a felony, larceny of property valued more than $250, allowing improper use of a credit card valued less than $250 and two charges of improper use of a credit card valued less than $250;
7:18 p.m.: fire, Campanelli Drive, a caller reports a fire in front of a Campanelli Drive business, the responding firefighters reports an area near the front door of the building was burning and the grass and mulch fire was extinguished;
8:48 p.m.: vandalism, Miller Street, a caller reports she returned home to find her house and a visitor’s vehicle had been egged, the responding officer reports the caller does not require a formal report but thought the incident should be noted;
10:17 p.m.: suspicious activity, Westfield High School, 177 Montgomery Road, a patrol officer reports he observed vehicles parked at the high school and investigated to find seven boys drinking beer and smoking marijuana, the boys were surrendered to the custody of family members and all parties were advised that the police response to a second such incident would be very different;
10:17 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, a caller reports an erratic operator on Western Avenue, the responding officer reports he caught up to the caller and the offending vehicle and when he attempted to stop it the vehicle drove across the roadway and over the curb before stopping, the officer reports the operator appeared to be intoxicated and failed a field sobriety test, Dale N. Guerrette, 53, of 306 Woodland Way, Russell, was arrested of operating under the influence of liquor (a subsequent offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle and for a marked lanes violation;
10:40 p.m.: vandalism, Washington Street, a resident came to the station to report 20-30 college aged persons were walking on Washington Street when two started to wrestle and fell on a fence causing damage;
11:17 p.m.: fire, Montgomery Street, a caller reports rubbish receptacle is on fire, the responding fire captain reports flames were showing upon arrival and the fire was extinguished;
11:18 p.m.: liquor law violation, Washington Street, a community policing supervisor reports a liquor law violation;
11:37 p.m.: liquor law violation, Main Street, a community policing officer reports a liquor law violation;
11:53 p.m.: liquor law violation, Mechanic Street, a community policing officer reports a liquor law violation;

12:33 a.m.: liquor law violation, Main Street, a community policing officer reports a liquor law violation, a city ordinance violation citation was issued;
10:27 a.m.: vandalism, Massey Street, a caller reports a window of his vehicle was shattered, the responding officer reports that a rear window of a van was found to be shattered but there was no evidence of the causative instrument, no entry was believed to have been gained and nothing was stolen;
11:49 a.m.: suspicious person, Franklin Avenue School, a caller reports three persons are on the roof of the school, the responding officer reports three boys who were found to be brothers attempted to flee from police, the youths were warned to stay off the roof;
12:56 p.m.: fire, Sackett Road, a caller reports an unattended fire behind a residence, the responding fire captain reports that the resident extinguished the fire;
1:16 p.m.: breaking and entering, Carroll Drive, a caller reports his residence was broken into while he was sleeping and his wallet was stolen, the responding officer reports the caller said that he keeps a spare key to his house in a can in the garage and he believes it was used to gain entry, the man said that the wallet was stolen from his trousers in the room where he was sleeping, the officer reports nothing else in the house was disturbed;
4:12 p.m.: fire, Western Avenue, a caller reports a burning complaint, the responding firefighters report residents were cooking over an open flame and were asked to extinguish their fire when they finished cooking;
4:13 p.m.: assist citizen, Prospect Street Extension, a caller reports a man is trapped under a tree which he cut down and is having difficulty breathing, the responding firefighters report the man declined transport for medical attention;
4:24 p.m.: larceny, Oakdale Avenue, a resident came to the station to report the theft of a bicycle, the responding officer reports the complainant said that the bike was stolen from his porch March 31;

12:36 a.m.: suspicious damage, school department maintenance barn, West Silver Street, a patrol officer reports he observed a broken window at the maintenance building, the officer reports no entry appears to have been made;
2:12 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Montgomery Road, a patrol officer reports he observed a vehicle operating appreciably faster that the speed limit and crossing the marked lanes, the officer reports the vehicle did not stop when he attempted to make a traffic stop and he gave chase until he found the vehicle on its side on the lawn of a Montgomery Road address, the officer reports that neither occupant was injured but the operator was obviously highly intoxicated, Derek R. Bernard, 25, of 56 Hidden Place, Southwick, was arrested for operating under the influence of liquor, operating under the influence of liquor (a subsequent offense), reckless operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, speeding and two marked lanes violations;
11:20 a.m.: fire, Main Street, an off duty firefighter reports a planter is smoking, dual response dispatched, the responding firefighters report burning mulch was extinguished;
12:16 p.m.: larceny, Klondike Avenue, a caller reports scrap metal was stolen from her truck, the responding officer reports the caller said that scrap copper tubing valued at about $30 was stolen from her truck;
2:05 p.m.: fire, Rachael Terrace, a caller reports a resident is trying to control a brush fire with a garden hose, dual response dispatched, the responding firefighters report the resident said that he had extinguished a fire where he had roasted marshmallows with his children the night before and doused it again in the morning but the high winds apparently caused it to reignite, the fire was fully extinguished by firefighters;
4:29 p.m.: larceny, Edgewood Apartments, 134 Union Street, a resident came to the station to report a stolen iPod, the responding officer reports the complainant said that an 8-year-old child had put the device on a playground bench and found it gone when she returned;
4:34 p.m.: animal complaint, Franklin Street at Smith Avenue, a caller reports finding a stray dog without tags, the responding animal control officer reports transporting the black German shepherd dog to the municipal animal shelter;
5:12 p.m.: disturbance, Mechanic Street at East Bartlett Street, an off duty officer reports six male parties on the roof of a house are drinking and making crass gestures to persons going to church, the responding officer reports the house is occupied by college aged tenants who were advised of the possible consequences of continuing their behavior;
7:03 p.m.: suspicious vehicle, Cycle Street a patrol officer reports he encountered a parked vehicle with registration revoked for lack of insurance, the plates were seized and the vehicle was towed;
7:55 p.m.: robbery, Western Circle, a caller reports her boyfriend stole her cell phone, the responding officer reports the caller said that her former boyfriend dropped off their children and wanted to take some DVD movies, the woman said she refused to allow him to take the movies and he threatened to take her phone if she didn’t let him have the movies, the woman said that when she continued to refuse he made good his threat, witnesses supported her account, a criminal complaint was filed;
8:02 p.m.: officer wanted, Springfield Road, a patrol officer reports he was advised of a person who was refusing to pay his taxi fare, the officer found the man to be highly intoxicated and placed him in protective custody;
11:40 p.m.: disturbance, Cycle Street, a caller reports she was assaulted by her husband who took her vehicle, the responding officer reports the woman said that during an argument with her husband about domestic issues he punched her, a criminal complaint was filed.
