Friday, Aug. 23, 2013
1:19 a.m.: found property, Main Street, a caller reports finding a bicycle, the responding officer reports the bike was transported to the station for safe keeping;
1:39 a.m.: accident, Washington Street, a caller reports a vehicle drove through a fence, the responding officer reports that a vehicle left the roadway, crossed a lawn and drove through a chain link fence, the operator was not injured but failed a field sobriety test, Brittany E. Cox, 26, of 14 Livingston Ave., was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor and for negligent operation of a motor vehicle;
9:17 a.m.: animal complaint, Alexander Place, the animal control officer reports taking custody of two dogs found running loose and transporting them to the municipal animal shelter;
10:05 a.m.: larceny, Arnold Street, a Holyoke resident came to the station to report that her purse was stolen the night before at an Arnold Street bar, the responding officer reports that she left her purse on a table at the bar while she was dancing and returned to find that the friend who had been keeping an eye on it had moved to another part of the bar and the designer purse which contained her smartphone and cash was missing, the woman said she had been too busy to report the loss at the time of the theft;
11:14 a.m.: disturbance, Kellogg Street, a caller reports a home health care worker has stated that her client is in fear of his son who is at the residence and appears to be angry, the responding officer reports the resident said that his son is usually at work when his home health care worker comes to help him and but had been there that day when the worker was there and became upset that he had not been informed about who was in his home, the man said that his son does have firearms as reported but said they are locked in his bedroom, his son has never threatened him or anybody else with guns and he is not in fear of his son, the officer reports he spoke with the man who said that he had become upset to find a stranger in his home but denied making any threats, the agency was advised to coordinate the worker’s visits with the homeowner;
3:11 p.m.: burning complaint, Root Road, a caller reports thick smoke coming from a nearby residence, the responding firefighters report that despite a language barrier the residents were advised to stop burning,;
3:19 p.m.: disturbance, Main Street, a caller reports a neighbor is yelling threats to harm her neighbors and her own cat, the responding officer reports that the subject agreed to keep the noise down and he was able to check on the well-being of her cat;
4:05 p.m.: disturbance, Park Square Town Houses, 140 Union St., a resident came to the station to report she was assaulted by her former boyfriend the night before, see story in the Monday edition of The Westfield News;
4:33 p.m.: larceny, The Willows Apartments, a resident came to the station to report a theft from his bedroom, the responding officer reports the complainant said that his iPad is missing and he suspects one of his roommate stole it, the man said that he had last seen it on the floor of his bedroom the previous Monday, the case was referred to the detective bureau;
5:21 p.m.: larceny, Elm Street, a detective reports he observed a male party exit a drug store with a purse on his head, the detective confronted the man and found that the purse contained personal care products which had apparently been stolen from the store, a female party also exited and said that she had asked her boyfriend to take her purse outside and he had not known that stolen property was inside it, the detective reports that charges were held in abeyance pending a review of the store’s security video;
8:26 p.m.: burning complaint, Conner Avenue, a caller reports illegal backyard burning down the street, the responding fire captain reports the homeowner was advised of the pertinent regulations and agreed to extinguish the fire;
9:42 p.m.: alcohol enforcement, Franklin Street, officers report a survey of customers at a Franklin Street liquor store revealed that all were of legal age;
10:07 p.m.: disturbance, Oaks Trailer Park, 404 Southwick Road, a caller reports an older man is yelling at a young female party, the responding officer reports he found a very small fire smoldering outside the trailer in question and he spoke with the female resident who said that her family had been outside with the fire when her husband yelled at their daughter, the man came outside and the officer immediately noticed the classic symptoms of alcohol intoxication, the woman said her husband drinks frequently and said that she cannot care for him in his current condition, the man’s daughter said she is afraid of her father when he is intoxicated, neither party had any safe place to go and the officer was unwilling to allow the man to remain with the family in his current condition, when advised that he was being placed in protective custody the man became uncooperative yelling and struggling with the officer who was obliged to resort to corporal measures to emplace handcuffs, David L. Hawley, 48, of 404 Southwick Road, was placed in protective custody and arrested for resisting arrest;
10:23 p.m.: disturbance, Kane Brothers Circle, a caller reports a domestic disturbance, the responding officer reports the caller said that during an argument with her husband she was attempting to videotape him to document his intoxication level and the man tried to grab her cellphone, the woman said that the man did not push her but she fell, the male party called a family member and a friend who came to the scene to assist and calm the situation, the officer reports the participants’ accounts were contradictory, no charges were filed;

1:30 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Elm Street, a patrol officer reports he observed a vehicle operating without lights and stopped the car, the vehicle’s registration was found to be expired, the vehicle was towed to the police impound yard and the occupants were provided a courtesy transport to a North Elm Street gas station to arrange for a way to get back to their homes in South Hadley and Monson;
9:23 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, King Avenue, a patrol officer reports he encountered an unregistered car parked on King Avenue, the car was towed to the police the impound yard;
9:51 a.m.: breaking and entering, West Silver Street, a caller reports her home was entered and jewelry is missing, the responding officer reports the elderly resident said that she has found that gold jewelry she does not often wear is missing, the woman said that she has not seen the jewelry for about a month but points out that other jewelry and other items of value have not been disturbed, the woman said that she does not have family members locally nor have there been any tradesmen in her living quarters, the woman said there have been no signs of forcible entry but she does sometimes leaves her house unlocked while she is outside gardening;
10:11 a.m.: breaking and entering, Otis Street, a caller reports his vehicle was broken into, the responding officer reports the caller said that he parked his car about 9 p.m. and in the morning found that the trunk had been pried open and an unsuccessful attempt had been made to move the back seat to gain access to the passenger compartment, the victim told the officer that stereo components have been kept in the trunk previously but had recently been removed;
2:02 p.m.: fire, Feeding Hills Road, an automatic system connected to a nursing facility reports a fire alarm, the responding firefighters report a popcorn popper activated the alarm and sprinkler system, the system was reset;
2:47 p.m.: fire, East Main Street, a supervisory officer reports a mulch fire on a traffic island, the responding firefighters report the fire was extinguished;
3:06 p.m.: trespassing, Broad Street, a patrol officer reports a possible homeless encampment behind a Broad Street church, the officer reports finding that two persons are living in a tent, the officer reports the couple was advised to dismantle their campsite and leave the area;
5:09 p.m.: fire, Southampton Road, person came to the fire station to report a mulch fire at the former Digital Equipment property, the responding firefighters reports that a ten by teen foot patch of smoldering mulch in a patio was extinguished;
6:14 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Railroad Avenue, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop, the officer reports that the registration plates on the vehicle were found to have been issued to another vehicle and the vehicle was both unregistered and uninsured, a criminal complaint was filed and the car was towed to the police impound yard;
8:09 p.m.: fireworks complaint, Mather Street, multiple callers report a number of explosive noises, the responding officer reports he found a large gathering at Mather Street where the resident said that he did not know which of his guests had ignited the fireworks but said they had all been expended, the officer advised the resident of the possible repercussions of illegal fireworks;
8:42 p.m.: burning complaint, George Street, a caller reports neighbors are burning things in “giant barrels”, the responding firefighters report a resident with a portable firepit was advised of the complaint and the fire was extinguished;
10:11 p.m.: larceny, Main Street, a caller reports her pickup truck was stolen while she was at work, the responding officer report the caller said that she parked her vehicle in a Main Street parking lot when she went to work and returned to find the unlocked truck gone.
