2:20 a.m.: suspicious persons, Hubbard Street, a patrol officer reports he observed two persons seated on a bench at the spray park and advised them that the park is closed, both parties left the area without incident;
2:53 a.m.: assist citizen, East Main Street, a patrol officer reports he observed a disabled vehicle and he and another officer helped the female operator change a flat tire;
4:19 a.m.: disabled vehicle, a caller reports a tractor-trailer unit may have become uncoupled, the responding officer requests a heavy duty tow for the unit which includes a trailer loaded with about 40,000 pounds of liquefied petroleum gas;
6:55 a.m.: assault, South Broad Street, a caller reports a male party smashed the window of her vehicle and struck her face, the responding officer reports he encountered a couple in a South Broad Street parking lot who were found to be married but estranged, both agreed that they met in the parking lot and an argument ensued , the male party said that the woman had smashed his cell phone and he grabbed at her mirror when she attempted to drive away, neither party wanted to pursue criminal charges;
11:24 a.m.: accident, Western Avenue, a multiple callers report a vehicle struck a utility pole, the responding officer reports that an eastbound vehicle struck the right curb and careened across the road to strike a utility pole, see photo in the Thursday edition of The Westfield News;
12:41 p.m.: animal complaint, Paper Mill Road, the director of animal control operations reports he took custody of a black Labrador retriever dog and transported it to the municipal animal shelter;
4:31 p.m.: illegal dumping, East Silver Street, a caller reports he observed a vehicle stop on East Silver Street and a man who exited left a television on the side of the roadway, an initial search of the area did not yield a suspect vehicle but later a patrol officer saw a SUV which fit the description of the suspect vehicle and occupants, the vehicle was stopped and the female party in the SUV said that her boyfriend had dumped a television despite her objection, the male party agreed to remove the television and the officer followed him back to the site to ensure compliance, a city ordinance violation citation was issued;
9:17 p.m.: breaking and entering, Springfield Road, multiple callers report a shirtless male party is attempting to break into a white van on a car dealer’s lot, a responding officer reports he observed a man without a shirt on Springfield Road a short distance from the dealer and stopped to speak with him, the officer reports the man dropped a stake he had been carrying when he saw the officer and denied being on the lot, when the man began ranting about his brother who had dropped him off in the area the officer realized that he was highly intoxicated , another officer arrived who said that a van at the dealership had suffered extensive recent damage consistent with impacts from stakes found near the van which were similar to the one the man dropped, two witnesses were located and one positively identified the suspect, while in custody the man smashed his head against the prisoner cage in the cruiser and broke the door handle attempting to exit, Benjamin Santiago-Figuero, 28, of 33 Montgomery St., was arrested for two counts of malicious damage to a motor vehicle;
10:07 p.m.: disturbance, Dubois Street, a caller from the White Street crime watch reports a domestic disturbance, the responding officer reports he spoke with a male party who said that he had been engaged in a recent argument with his wife who had left with two of their five children, the officer noted that one of the children’s bedroom smelled of urine, another was very warm due to a clothes dryer which was vented through a window and noted that the woman took the children out of their home after 10 p.m. on the eve of the first day of the school year, the Department of Children and Families was notified of the officer’s concerns.
