Emergency Response and Crime Report
Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013
12:42 a.m.: fire, Belmont Street, a caller reports smoke from the attic is coming into the living room area, the responding officer reports that occupants were evacuated and he entered to find smoke coming from a electrical ceiling fixture, the responding firefighters report the electrical wires had short circuited and charred a joist but did not ignite flames, the firefighters found that batteries had been removed form smoke detectors which were otherwise non-conforming, the landlord was notified to bring the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors up to code and the residents found alternate overnight accommodations pending the work needed to make the residence fit for habitation;
1:36 a.m.: liquor law violation, Arnold Street, a patrol officer reports he observed a person leaving an Arnold Street bar carrying a beer bottle, the officer reports that there is a history of patrons being allowed to leave the bar with bottles and glasses and he again advised the staff to be more vigilant;
3:15 p.m.: found property, Stanley Park, 400 Western Avenue, a resident came to the station to surrender a purse found in the park, the responding officer reports that although a phone number for the owner was found the phone did not accept a message when called, the purse was held at the station for safe keeping;
4:16 p.m.: illegal dumping, Pochassic Road, a caller reports she has an ongoing issue with persons discarding refuse on her property and has again found trash, the responding officer reports a document found in a discarded furniture item led him to a Pine Street address where the resident said that the document belongs to the former resident who he believes moved to New York, the man said that the house had been cleaned out prior to his arrival and said he would attempt to find contact information for his landlord;
5:31 p.m.: officer wanted, a caller reports he cut himself on broken glass while trying to enter his mother’s home via a window in her absence but said the bleeding is not serious, dual response dispatched, the man was transported to Noble Hospital and the officer ascertained that the man is allowed to be in his mother’s home;
7:20 p.m.: illegal burning, Simmons Brook Drive, a caller reports neighbors are burning insulation off copper wires and thereby creating noxious smoke, the responding firefighters reports the residents were advised that the activity is not permitted and the fire was extinguished;
8:25 p.m.: illegal burning, Beverly Drive, a caller reports a neighbor is burning brush or trash, the responding fire captain reports that the resident was advised of the pertinent regulations and extinguished the fire;
8:29 p.m.: disturbance, a caller reports an unwelcome guest, see story in the Tuesday edition of The Westfield News;
9:16 p.m.: suspicious noise, Westwood Drive, a caller reports hearing what sounded like a sonic boom and while investigating encountered a neighbor who was also investigating an unusual noise, the responding officer reports he found another neighbor who was extinguishing a fire and said that he had put something in the fire which caused a loud bang;
9:32 p.m.:disturbance, Colonial Pine Acres, 50 Southampton Road, a caller reports a number of persons arrived at his apartment and appear to want to fight, the responding officer reports that he was told that a woman with an entourage arrived at her brother’s apartment and was upset to find her sister-in-law there, the officer was told that the visitor assaulted the resident by pulling her hair and scratching her, a criminal complaint for assault and battery in a domestic relationship was filed;
9:54 p.m.: trespassing, Hubbard Street, a caller reports 3-4 youths in the spray park are disturbing his peace, the responding officer reports he advised the youths of the rules and hours of operation of the park and they left the area.
