Saturday, March 30, 2013
12:44 a.m.: disturbance, Avery Street, a caller reports a bonfire nearby, the responding officer reports a gathering could be heard from the end of the street and about 12 persons were found around a fire, the residents complied with a suggestion to put out the fire and take their gathering inside;
10:54 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Springfield Road, a patrol office reports a routine check of a parked car revealed the owner was the subject of an outstanding warrant, the officer reports when a person returned to the vehicle and left the vehicle was stopped, the operator was found to not be the owner but a routine check revealed that he, too, was the subject of an outstanding warrant and his license was suspended, Wilfredo Gonzalez Jr., 41, of 18 Green Acre Square, Springfield was arrested for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and on the 2010 warrant;
11:11 a.m.: identity fraud, a resident came to the station to complain of identity fraud, the responding officer reports the woman said that she received acknowledgment from an online merchant she had patronized previously referencing a purchase of a gift card she had not initiated, a credit card she had used previously to make a purchase from the vendor was used for the unauthorized purchase which had been ordered to be sent to a California address, the order was cancelled and the credit card account was closed;
1:00 p.m.: fire, East Main Street, a caller reports smoke coming from under the Air National Guard Bridge, the responding firefighters report a camp fire was found and extinguished;
2:45 p.m.: fire, Westfield Sportsman’s Club, Furrowtown Road, a caller reports a brush fire, the responding firefighters report a brush fire covering less than an acre was doused and persons on the scene agreed to stand a fire watch to ensure it did not again flare up;
5:08 p.m.: disturbance, Shepard Street, a caller reports a known person is at her residence creating a disturbance, the responding officer reports the caller said that the mother of her boyfriend’s son had contacted her by phone and a short time later she heard banging on her door, the woman said that she and her boyfriend ignored the disturbance because they didn’t want to deal with the woman and then heard her yelling inside and throwing furnishings , the caller said that she was able to eject the intruder, the officer reports that criminal complaints for breaking and entering and vandalism were filed;
6:59 p.m.: animal complaint, Bates Street, a caller reports that about 3:30 p.m. she had been in her backyard and saw that a neighbor’s dog was loose and had entered her yard, the woman said that she attempted to pick up the dog and it scratched her arm causing it to bleed, the woman said that she sought medical attention and six stitches were required, the officer reports the dog owner said that his 90 pound bulldog mix dog pushed its way outside via an improperly closed door, the man said that he has consulted a canine professional and has concluded that he cannot keep the dog, the man said that he attempted to surrender the dog at the municipal animal shelter and learned that he could not immediately do so but has arranged an appointment to surrender it;
8:13 p.m.: fire, Russellville Road, a caller reports a brush fire at the corner of Cabot and Russellville roads, the responding firefighters report the resident was advised of the pertinent regulations and extinguished the fire;
8:15 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Washington Street, an officer reports an erratic operator, the responding officer reports the vehicle was stopped and the operator appeared to be intoxicated, the man failed a field sobriety test, Dimitry Belyshev, 38, of 49 Kamuda St., Indian Orchard, was arrested for operating under the influence of liquor (a subsequent offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, failure to signal, and a marked lanes violation;
10:17 p.m.: disturbance, Green Pine Lane, a caller reports that his wife arrived home intoxicated and had been driving with their two children in the vehicle, the responding officer reports the woman displayed the classic symptoms of alcohol intoxication and said she had been driving around while drinking 5-6 beers with her two young children in the back seat, her husband pointed out that the vehicle had struck something and showed the officer the damage, the woman said she did not know when or where the crash had occurred, the Department of Children and Families was notified;
11:09 p.m.: disturbance, Orange Street, a caller reports a female party told her that a known party had assaulted her and menaced her brother with a gun, the responding officer reports the woman said that a known man had pushed her down twice and pushed her brother down when he objected then menaced him with a gun, the officer noted that while it appeared that both victims had been drinking neither showed any sign of injury, the officer was able to identify the suspect who acknowledged that he had argued with the woman but denied any physical contact and said that he has never owned a gun, the officer found that multiple witnesses including the woman’s two sons said that her story was a fabrication;
11:12 p.m.: breaking and entering, Woodcliff Drive, a caller reports family members returned home to find it had been broken into and property had been stolen, the responding detective reports that a window was found to have been forced open to allow access and property including a jar of loose coin, a collection of gold coins and a collection of vintage paper money had been stolen;

1:25 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Lincoln Street, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop for speeding, the vehicle was stopped and a routine check revealed that the operator’s license was suspended, Beau K. Porter, 20, of 84 Prospect St., Hatfield, was arrested for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and for speeding in violation of special regulations;
10:18 a.m.: found property, Maple Street at Orange Street, a caller reports finding a bicycle, the responding officer reports the bike was transported to the station for safe keeping;
11:09 a.m.: fire, Shaker Road, caller reports smoke is filling the neighborhood, the responding firefighters report the fire was permitted and no violations were observed, the resident was allowed to continue to burn;
12:13 p.m.: fire, Montgomery Road, a caller reports a neighbor’s fire has ignited a tree, the responding firefighters report they extinguished the brush fire and stood by as the tree was felled and dropped into a brook;
1:15 p.m.: accident, East Silver Street, a caller reports a tractor trailer unit has struck the railroad overpass, a heavy tow was summoned to extricate the truck and trailer;
4:39 p.m.: larceny, Elm Street, a caller from an Elm Street pharmacy reports a person is cutting open packages inside the store, the responding officer reports the caller said that a man had been discovered in the act of using a box cutter to open a package containing a cell, the man was taken into custody and found to be in possession of prescription medication for which he had no prescription, Michael C. Hawkins, 54, of 16 Furrow St., was arrested for shoplifting by concealing merchandise and for possession of a Class E drug;
5:06 p.m.: fire, Montgomery Road, a caller reports a fire which may be hazardous due to high winds, the responding firefighters report the fire was extinguished;
5:17 p.m.: vandalism, Grand Street, a caller reports her former boyfriend broke into her residence early Saturday morning, the responding officer reports the woman said that she had been at her former boyfriend’s residence when he examined her smartphone and became upset when he found that she had dated another person, the woman said he took her phone outside and smashed it completely before going to her vehicle and punching the exterior mirrors, the officer reports criminal complaints were filed;
7:24 p.m.: vandalism, Springfield Road, a caller reports he observed that his girlfriend’s former boyfriend’s vehicle was parked near his when he went into a Springfield Road department store and he returned to find his vehicle had been keyed, the responding officer reports that the victim’s girlfriend said that she had seen her former boyfriend and his brother in the parking lot, the officer was able to review the store’s security video and observed a person exit the driver’s side of the suspect vehicle and walk toward the victim’s vehicle, the officer was able to speak with victim who denied vandalizing the vehicle but acknowledged that he had been driving, the man and his brother came to the station and the suspect’s brother claimed to have inflicted the damage, the officer reports that he believes that the suspect’s brother is attempting to take responsibility for his brother’s actions because his brother is on probation, the officer reports a criminal complaint was filed against the original suspect;
7:38 p.m.: trespassing, Paper Mill Road, a caller requests that police check on some trespassers who have a fire on his property, the responding officer reports he found four persons around a campfire and one said that he used to work for the caller, the trespassers were identified and left the area, the caller said that he does not wish to pursue criminal charges;
10:56 p.m.: officer wanted, Dubois Street, a caller reports someone entered his home, the responding officer reports the caller said that someone entered his home via a locked door but left when he went to investigate, the man said that he followed the suspect when he left in a vehicle and noted the vehicle’s registration plate numbers, the officer reports the registration provided does not elicit a match and there is evidence to suggest that the caller never left his home, the officer reports he found no evidence that the described incident actually occurred;

9:01 a.m.: animal complaint, Bates Road, the director of animal control operations reports he took custody of a stray German Sheppard dog and transported it to the municipal animal shelter;
9:27 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Elm Street, a patrol officer requests a tow for a vehicle found to have expired registration, the vehicle was towed;
12:20 p.m.: assist citizen, Grenier Drive, a caller requests assistance for her 88-year-old mother who has locked herself out of her home, the responding fire captain reports firefighters were unable to effect entry;
1:01 p.m.: officer wanted, Springfield Road, multiple callers report a woman is walking in traffic, the responding officer reports that the woman was found to be disoriented and a routine check revealed her to be the subject of an outstanding warrant, Noemi Carrasquillo, 31, of 208 Florida St., Springfield, was arrested on the warrant;
5:55 p.m.: fire, Highland Avenue, a caller reports a fire under her stove, the responding firefighters report the fire had been inside the stove and had burned out prior to their arrival;
10:18 p.m.: arrest, Main Street, detective report the suspect in a shooting investigation was found on Main Street, see story in the Tuesday edition of The Westfield News;
11:02 p.m.: suspicious person, Union Street at Springdale Road, a patrol officer reports he observed a known person believed to be the subject of an outstanding warrant, the warrant was confirmed, Miguel Torres, 31, of 58 Sycamore St., Springfield, was arrested on the 2012 warrant.
