1:53 a.m.: suspicious vehicle, Main Line Drive, a caller reports there is a pickup truck behind Main Line Drive businesses, the responding officer reports that he encountered a male party who was securing a load of scrap metal in his truck, the officer reports the man said that he found some items behind the businesses but the bulk of the metal was found in Springfield, the officer reports that he spoke with representatives of two businesses who said that they were not concerned about any metal which might have been found behind their buildings and did not wish to pursue the matter, the man told the officer that it was “the first and last time” he had come to the city in search of scrap metal and he was sent on his way, a caller later complained that an oil drum that had been cut down to make a grill had been stolen;
9:49 a.m.: arrest, Union Street, an officer reports he sought the subject of two outstanding warrants at his last known address and found him there, Daniel A. Lisitsin, 26, of 28 Union St., was arrested on the warrants;
10:15 a.m.: larceny, Thomas Street a resident reports via the online reporting option that a bicycle was stolen;
12:51 p.m.: assist citizen, Whitaker Road, a caller reports there has been a cat in tree for the past 24 hours, the responding fire captain reports fighters were unable to help the cat which was out-of-reach of their ladders;
1:07 p.m.: school investigation, Westfield Middle School North, a school resource officer reports two pupils were engaged in a non-physical altercation, the SRO report the incident was referred to school officials for administrative sanctions;
1:32 p.m.: city regulation violation, Mullen Avenue, an officer reports that he observed that a resident had deployed a sprinkler system in violation of a recently enacted regulation limiting non-essential water use, the resident was advised of the infraction;
2:34 p.m.: fire, Southampton Road, multiple callers report a vehicular fire near a convenience store, dual response dispatched, the responding officer reports the operator said that her brakes failed and when she stopped to investigate she found flames in the engine compartment, the responding firefighters report the vehicle was fully engulfed upon arrival and was extinguished, firefighters report that the fire may have been caused by brake fluid which came in contact with the hot engine;
2:54 p.m.: larceny, Stanley Park, 400 Western Avenue, a detective supervisor reports a backpack blower valued at about $450 was reported to have been stolen;
3:29 p.m.: disturbance, West Silver Street, a caller reports his wife pulled a knife on him, the responding officer reports that several witnesses agreed that no knife was involved but an argument devolved into a pushing match and indicated that both parties were culpable, Corey Scott McDaniel, 43, of 65 W. Silver St. was arrested for assault and battery in a domestic relationship, a criminal complaint for the same charge was filed against the female party;
4:22 p.m.: disturbance, West Silver Street, a caller reports persons were beating another with a ball bat, the responding officer reports he encountered five women in a driveway and leaned that four had come to the residence seeking a dress from a resident, the resident said that she went outside when the women arrived and said one was carrying a ball bat which was not used when she was assaulted by one of the women and the others joined in the attack, the victim’s fiancé said he went outside to assist the victim when she was attacked and took control of the bat which he used to strike one of the victim’s assailants, a witness said that she had seen the four women in the driveway and one was holding a bat but when she stopped her vehicle and looked again the man had the bat, all four of the women who came together said that the bat did not come with them but was on the property when they arrived, a criminal complaint for assault and battery was filed against the woman who allegedly initiated the assault and a criminal complaint for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon was filed against the man, the officer noted a distinct odor of automotive air freshener on the bat and found a very strong odor of air freshener in the suspects’ vehicle;
6:09 p.m.: breaking and entering, Simmons Brook Drive, a caller reports that his home was broken into and property was stolen, the responding officer reports the caller said that he had been gone during the day and returned home to find his bedroom had been ransacked and jewelry had been stolen, the officer reports that entry was apparently gained through a window;
8:10 p.m.: animal complaint, Loomis Ridge, a caller reports she has taken custody of a stray dog and there is another loose dog in the area she has not been able to catch, the responding animal control officer reports the dog was transported to the municipal animal shelter;
8:40 p.m.: disturbance, Monroe Street, a dispatcher reports an unintelligible caller indicated an unknown problem, the responding officer reports he encountered a group of persons and as he approached he clearly saw a woman punch another woman in her face, Laura O. Owens, 43, of 34 Meadow St., was arrested for assault and battery and disorderly conduct;
9:35 p.m.: fire, Apremont Way, a caller reports a structure fire, see story and photo in the Friday edition of The Westfield News;
11:58 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Arnold Street, a patrol officer requests a tow for a vehicle found to have expired registration, the vehicle was towed to the police impound yard.
