Emergency Response and Crime Report

1:04 a.m.: found property, Main Street, a resident came to the station with a flag he found on Main Street which had blown off a city flagpole, the flag was accepted for safe keeping;
8:26 a.m.: fire, Woodside Terrace, a caller reports couch is on fire, dual response dispatched, the responding firefighters report a couch in the breezeway not far from a wood stove had caught fire and the resident had expended a dry chemical fire extinguisher to extinguish it, the firefighters assisted with the evacuation of two residents and moved the couch out of the residence where they ensured that the fire was completely extinguished, the resident said that she suspects her dog who likes to play with the kindling when she lights the wood stove may have inadvertently transported an ember to the couch where it sleeps, the dog had fled the house and was not immediately corralled;
9:03 a.m.: found property, Meadow Street, a patrol officer reports finding a U.S. flag on the ground which was dislodged from a utility pole, an officer points out that since the flag was found on the ground it should be retired and delivered to the U.S. Marine Corps League for respectful disposal;
11:58 a.m.: officer wanted, Country Club Drive, a resident came to the station to report she received a phone call from a person who asked her to confirm personal information he already had about her, the woman said she is concerned because the man had valid information including her social security number and said that someone would visit her to deliver paperwork, the officer reports there is no evidence that a crime has been committed;
2:14 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Russell Road, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop, the vehicle’s registration was found to be expired, the vehicle was towed to the police impound yard;
2:33 p.m.: accident, Thomas Street, a patrol officer reports a tractor trailer unit is stuck under a railroad overpass, the officer reports a heavy duty tow truck was needed to extricate the truck from the viaduct;
2:48 p.m.: suspicious activity, Massachusetts Air National Guard Bridge, East Main Street, a hunter in a wooded area north of the bridge reports a car which was “doing donuts” has parked and he believes the occupants are smoking marijuana, the responding officer reports he found the vehicle parked below the hunter’s tree stand and detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana although the operator said that they were “just hanging around”, the operator was advised to leave the area;
3:59 p.m.: animal complaint, Otis Street, a caller reports an opossum in her driveway appears to be injured, the responding officer reports the animal was behaving oddly and had obviously sustained severe trauma, the animal was dispatched;
10:30 p.m.: animal complaint, Union Street, a caller reports striking a deer with her vehicle, the responding officer reports minor damage to the vehicle and that the deer was deceased;
10:50 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Chapel Street, a supervisory officer reports a traffic stop, the vehicle’s registration was found to be revoked for lack of insurance, the operator’s license was found to be suspended and both occupants were found to be the subjects of outstanding warrants, Chrystal G. Smart, 42, of 147 Allston Ave., West Springfield, was arrested for allowing unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, for allowing operation of an uninsured motor vehicle and on a warrant, Gary W. Powell, 43, also of 147 Allston Ave., was arrested for operating a motor vehicle with suspended license and on the warrant.
