12:35 a.m.: disturbance, Orange Street at Maple Street, a patrol officer reports that he observed a college aged youth urinating on the sidewalk who fled when the officer stopped, the officer reports he spoke with and identified three persons who had been with the offender who were not helpful;
12:50 a.m.: city ordinance violation, Church Street, a community policing officer reports he observed a college aged youth on Church Street drinking from a can of beer, the officer approached the youth who attempted to conceal the can, the youth said that he had no identification with him but acknowledged that he was younger than the legal drinking age, city ordinances violations for being a person younger than the legal drinking age in possession of alcohol and for possession of an open container of alcohol in public were filed;
1:00 a.m.: disturbance, Orange Street, a patrol officer in the area for an unrelated reason reports his attention was drawn to a college aged youth who was screaming and was seen to pull up a section of fencing which he threw down so it landed in the street and sidewalk, the man was taken into custody and during the booking process was found to be in possession of a false out-of-state driver’s license, Luke J. Smith, 20, of 2 Grace Terrace, Medway, was arrested for vandalizing property, disorderly conduct and misuse of a registry of motor vehicle document;
1:29 a.m.: disturbance, Elm Street, a patrol officer reports he was flagged down on Elm Street by a person who said that there were persons on a roof who had thrown things and spat on pedestrians, the officer was also told that one had urinated from the roof, the officer reports he heard persons moving on the roof and went to the back of the building where he saw one party enter a window from the roof and a second person run to an apartment door where he caught up with him, the man said he didn’t know who lived in the apartment, the residents were awakened and allowed the officer entry to a bedroom where a disheveled man was found who was a friend of one of the tenants, eventually both non-residents admitted to being on the roof but denied propelling anything from it, a criminal complaint w as filed against the youth found inside the apartment, Tyler J. Shank, 20, of 6 Childs Road, Monson, was arrested for trespass;
2:42 a.m.: annoying phone calls, Bates Street, a resident came to the station to complain of annoying text messages, the responding officer reports the complainant said that since Sept 3 she has received more than 400 text messages from a person and some included nude photos of a male party, the woman deleted the pictures and many of the messages, the officer reports he called the number the messages were sent from and left a message advising the caller of the possible repercussions if the text messages continue;
10:04 a.m.: accident, Elm Street, a detail officer reports a tractor trailer unit struck a tree, the responding officer reports the truck was avoiding construction work and the corner of the trailer struck a tree which dislodged it, the tree was removed by DPW workers;
11:51 a.m.: larceny, Springfield Road, a caller from a Springfield Road department store requests an officer for an employee who has been found to be systematically stealing from the store, the responding officer reports store officials told him that a checkout clerk has been investigated and found to have failed to scan items brought to her cash register by a confederate who then removed the merchandise from the store, the officer was told that the clerk had been observed on six occasions during which she and her accomplice stole merchandise valued at more than $1,000, Natasha Shaqueen Wilson, 20, of 11 High St., was arrested for larceny of property valued more than $250 by a single scheme;
12:55 p.m.: found property, Shaker Road, a caller reports finding a mountain bike in woods behind her house, the responding officer reports he transported the bicycle to the station for safe keeping;
1:45 p.m.; arrest, King Street, a detective reports that an investigation resulted in an arrest for possession of marijuana, see story in Monday’s edition of The Westfield News;
5:50 p.m.: vandalism, Park Square, a patrol officer reports he observed youths skateboarding at the Green and observed one youth riding his skateboard on railings, the youths were sent on their ways except for one boy who was returned to his home so the officer could speak with his mother;
6:23 p.m.: assault, Elm Street, a caller reports her 12-year-old son was assaulted by about five youths, the responding officer reports the boy said that he was had been swimming in the river after school near the Great River Bridge in an area where there is a rope swing when he was confronted by four boys who blocked his exit with their bicycles, the boy said that three of the boys are middle schoolmates whom he knows at least slightly and the fourth was a 16-year-old high school student he can also identify, the victim said that the boys sought him out because they claimed that he had referred to one of the boys’ mother by a sexually offensive term and said that the older boy held him while the three others punched and kicked him causing him to fall to the ground, the boy said that he suffered a cut lip which was no longer obvious and the officer noted a lump on his head as well as scrapes and abrasions on his legs, the boy’s mother said that she was not sure if she wants to pursue criminal charges and said that although she is disinclined to seek charges against the younger boys she may want to charge the older boy, the officer advised the woman that she could seek a criminal complaint at Westfield District Court if she chooses to, the officer reports that the school resource officers at the relevant schools will be notified;
8:39 p.m.: larceny, East Main Street, a caller from a women’s clothing store requests an officer for an employee who has been systematically stealing from the store, the responding officer reports that an employee has been found to have bought gift cards with funds from legitimate cash transactions then redeemed the gift cards and pocketing the cash, the suspect admitted 43 such instances of larceny which netted more than $3,000 in cash and also admitted stealing a lesser amount of merchandise outright, the suspect signed a statement admitting his culpability and detailing his method, criminal complaints for larceny of property valued more than $250 by a single scheme and for larceny of property valued less than $250 by a single scheme were filed;
10:46 p.m.: liquor law violation, East Bartlett Street, community policing officers on a plain clothes liquor law enforcement detail report they observed two youths on East Bartlett Street with backpacks, the officers report they approached the duo and identified themselves as police officer before they asked the youths to identify themselves which they did, the officers report one youth was asked what was in his backpack and he said there was nothing and offered them an opportunity to look, the officers report the youth appeared to be astonished when two cold cans of beer were found, Adam Abrhams, 20, of 38 Thomas Street was arrested for being a person younger than the legal drinking age in possession of liquor, when the second youth was asked what was in his backpack he did not answer but opened it to show the officers there were two cans of beer in his backpack, a marijuana grinder which contained marijuana was also found, city ordinance violation citations were filed;
11:43 p.m.: larceny, Springfield Road, a resident came to the station to complain that his wallet was stolen at a Springfield Road department store, the responding officer reports the complainant said that he had inadvertently left his wallet which contained $500 in cash and personal documents on the counter when checking out and when he realized his mistake and returned the wallet was gone, the man said that he spoke with store staff who said security video showed that the couple in line immediately behind him stole the wallet, the officer reports the store manager described the couple and said that he would get documentation of the couple’s transaction from the corporate office of the store and provide it to the investigating detectives.
