NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations will join other faith leaders at a protest over a former town official’s Facebook posts.
Paul Couturier, a former member of Representative Town Meeting in North Attleborough, shared images the group called anti-Muslim and racist.
One image of a shark contained the caption: “Throw me a Muslim.” Another depicted a gorilla with the text: “A rare glimpse of the first lady on vacation.”
Couturier declined to comment. He resigned March 17 after criticism.
The interfaith protest is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday outside North Attleborough Middle School, where Town Meeting will be held.
The executive director of the Massachusetts chapter of CAIR says the protest is planned despite Couturier’s resignation because other members of Town Meeting made supportive statements of his initial anti-Muslim rhetoric.
