PulseLine: Mayor Humason

Let me start by saying I think Sen. Humason does a very good job representing Westfield at the Statehouse and has done so for many years. He has an incredible amount of experience as a state legislature, just look at his resume. However, as much as I personally like Don and respect his career, he has zero, none, no experience running a municipality. Consider if you will that Westfield is a city with a $120+ million dollar budget with more than a thousand employees and unions to deal with, all on an every day basis. Has Sen. Humason ever managed more than a few people? No. He has some experience with budgeting but filing bills for a state budget is vastly different than creating a local municipal budget. A mayor has to be able to deal with the daily, incessant, inquiries from Westfield residents about potholes, the water situation, a dead tree, illegally parked cars and all the other mundane things…every…day. He has such name recognition that, sadly, Sen. Humason will most likely run unopposed. His name recognition is no different than a TV personality running and winning a position they are not qualified for. Again, I respect Sen. Humason’s work at the state level but I think he and Westfield would be better served if he remained in that role. We as voters need to look past the friendliness of the candidate and examine, truly examine, their qualifications to run our city.
