In the August 31 Pulseline, the commenter mentions the lane confusion traveling north over the bridge. I travel this way daily as well and frankly, it should be a non-issue. While the design is awkward, it’s also incredibly simple. When we went through driver’s education, we learned that you just stay between the lines. When you want to cross the lines into another lane, you look to be sure no one is there, then use your turn signal. The lines are clearly drawn. If you are in the middle lane at the light then you proceed into the left lane. Those in the right lane have two choices: the right turn lane onto Union Street or the middle lane to go forward onto North Elm. The lines are drawn. How much simpler could it be? Awkward? Yes. Complicated? No. When you cross the lines, you’ve changed lanes. If you don’t look or signal when doing so, you’re breaking the law. I hate to say that if you do eventually get side-swiped there, the fault will be yours. The authorities will simply point out that you changed lanes illegally. It boggles my mind that residents who travel this way regularly cannot simply observe the lines. We couldn’t agree with you more!!

Isn’t it interesting that President Dobelle is being audited for the same issues of spending that got him run out of his job in Hawaii? The auditing firm, O’Connor & Drew, found a long period of questionable spending by Dobelle and other administrators yet The Board of Trustees gave him a vote of confidence, go figure. Were The Trustees with him on some of these lavish spending trips he took? In this day and age where college costs have skyrocketed making an education, for most, a very expensive pursuit, we have this guy spending University money like it is own personal candy store. Why don’t they use some of this wasted expense to alleviate the traffic issues on Western Ave and build that much needed commuter lot on Route 20. With Mayor Knapik’s Cross St. fiasco and the Western Ave project he is shoving down the residents throats for Evan’s beckoning, it might be time for the State’s Secretary of Education and the Westfield voters to look for new leadership in these very important positions that run our beautiful City. Then again I would imagine there will be a state job waiting for Dan when he is voted out.

Such great thoughts in the August 31 Westfield News in the September Think Tank by 10th graders! Now, if only adults took these thoughts seriously, we could get the information to those who offer us hundreds of food items with all these additives and artificial ingredients that are questionable. Do we need a supermarket with thousands of food items that don’t add to our health? More natural products would be a better choice for our money and health. Read “Are you eating real food?” by Allison Mitchell, Clinical Nutrition Manager at Noble hospital in Westfield News August 27.

Yes, I’m calling to complain about Pine Hill Cemetery. It’s falling apart. The mortar’s coming out of the stones in the front. The roads are a big mess. Some of the gravestones have fallen over. They haven’t picked them up and other ones are buried in grass. The people that died – you won’t even know that they’ve been there after a few more years because the stones are all covered up and you can’t even see them. Soon they’ll be at the bottom of the grass and nobody will know they ever existed. You think somebody would do something about it, whoever is in charge.
