Quarter Auction to benefit youth sports

HUNTINGTON-Area residents who enjoy auctions – and supporting local causes – are sought by Sarah DaSilva for this spring’s quarter auction at Stanton Hall.

“My goal is to raise $500 for the Gateway Youth Athletic Association (GYAA),” said DaSilva, who serves as the organization’s fundraising coordinator. “GYAA offers area youth opportunities to play on teams of rec and travel basketball and soccer.”
The Quarter Auction is planned March 28 with doors opening at 5 p.m. and the auction starting promptly at 6. The cost is $10 to use two paddles for bidding.

“Without GYAA our children wouldn’t get the opportunity to play team sports in the area,” said DaSilva, noting the programs are for children from preschool age to sixth grade.

This spring, DaSilva anticipates that close to 300 young people will be served by the organization.

“GYAA prepares youth for high school sports at Gateway Regional,” said DaSilva, adding GYAA is not affiliated with the school system.

DaSilva said she has a wide variety of auction items including local restaurant gift certificates, cocoa and steeped tea supplies, jewelry and handmade items.

“If others would be willing to make donations we would gladly accept,” said DaSilva, who can be reached by calling (413) 426-0517 or by email to [email protected].

DaSilva is being assisted in this endeavor by emcee Justine Dowd, a sports mom and friend of DaSilva’s, and Jenna Bessey, also a close friend.

“We have a few Boy Scouts willing to collect quarters as they help make this a success too,” said DaSilva.

For attendees, refreshments for sale will include water, soda, and energy drinks, as well as a table filled with baked goods.

“I’m hoping we can expect 50 or more guests,” said DaSilva, adding, “this quarter auction will help with each soccer game and referees financially.”

DaSilva said support from the community is important in several ways.

“GYAA is so beneficial for our children and their families,” said DaSilva. “I know I’ve grown friendships with my children playing in GYAA too.”
