Quentin W. Sizer

WESTFIELD – Quentin Winfield Sizer, 89, of Westfield, passed away on May 2, 2020 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield of a heart-related condition. He was born in Norway, Maine on April 22, 1931. Son of the late Ralph M. Sizer, architect.  His fourth great grandfather was Cpt. William Sizer, Revolutionary War. He was a graduate of Westfield High School, Class of 1949. He received his private pilot license in 1949 and was a pilot in the C.A.P. He attended Ohio State University for a year and graduated from a 5-year program at Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Architecture degree and from Air Force R.O.T.C. with the rank of Second Lt. in 1955. He was called to active duty in 1956 and served as an installation engineer on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea between Siberia and Alaska, and then served at a nuclear installation at Westover Air Force Base. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force with the rank of Captain.

Quentin became a registered architect in 1968. He went into business with his father who was an architect and worked on many projects. They had exhibits in the Westfield Athenaeum relating to “the Practice of Architecture” and the architectural planning methods up to 1983. He and his dad were a great architectural team! One of the things he was known for was building large scale school models, including those of Northside Elementary School, Westfield; Sandisfield School, Sandisfield; the old High School on Smith Avenue School, Westfield; and Robinson Park Elementary School, Agawam.  From the 1960’s – 80’s, he had airfield displays and scale plastic aircraft with operating electric motors that he installed. In 1980 he had a large airfield display in Hanger 1 at Westover AFB showing WWII and Vietnam Airfields with over 250 aircraft with various types of hangers, buildings, structures, contrail towers and various types of revetments and hard stands.  In 1989, he submitted two 30 in x 40 in drawings for the Korean War Veteran memorial competition in Washington D.C. There were 545 submitted designs. He owned a one-of-a-kind military jeep and trailer to the present.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wonderful and loving sisters Dawnalyn Dee (Sizer) Powers, Beverly Faith (Sizer) Davis and her husband Robert F. Davis. He loved his sisters and brother-in-law very much. Quentin has one son, Brian Keith Sizer of Palmer, MA, whom he loved dearly and two lovely granddaughters, Jessica and Grace Sizer who he loved dearly in Palmer, MA.

The Dewey/Sizer Monument, starting in 1818, lists the family located in Pine Hill Cemetery Westfield, MA.
