CHICOPEE – The Southwick-Tolland Regional High School girls’ soccer team ran into a roadblock during the regular season at Monson. The Rams’ drive stalled again, this time in the Western Massachusetts Division III tournament.
No. 2 Monson scored on a header in the 22nd minute of each half to defeat third-seeded Southwick 2-0 in the D3 tourney semifinals on Friday night at Szot Park in Chicopee.
Monson’s premier scorer, Brooke Murphy notched the first goal of the game with 18:23 remaining in the first half, heading a dart past Southwick junior goalie Meg Zabik.
The outcome may have been the result of a few inches though.
Earlier in the game, Southwick senior Jess Teodore displayed some nifty footwork dancing around a defender and dishing off to Paige Cool, who drilled a shot that pinged off the right post.
As the game wore on, Monson (18-0-2) became more aggressive. The Mustangs followed a shot that Zabik tipped away. Meghan McGuill headed it in.
Southwick, which lost to Monson 2-1 on the road during the regular season, finished the season with a final record of 11-4-5.
