Residents urged to lock vehicles

WESTFIELD- Police are again urging Westfield residents to be diligent about locking their vehicles after the string of car break-ins continued last week.

WESTFIELD POLICE CHIEF LAWRENCE VALLIERE

Police Chief Lawrence P. Valliere said Tuesday that in the early hours of  Jan. 10 five more vehicles were broken into and one vehicle was stolen in the area of Granville Road and Southview Terrace. Valliere said that his officers believe that the suspects are the same people who have been breaking into vehicles in Westfield in recent months.

He said that evidence discovered in one of the vehicles strongly points to the suspects being from Connecticut. The stolen vehicle was eventually discovered in Connecticut as well. He previously said he believes that the suspects are from the Hartford area.

As Valliere said in December, every single one of the vehicles that was broken into was left unlocked by the owner. The one that was stolen was left with the keys still inside.

The string of vehicle break ins on Jan. 10 was the first time it had happened in several weeks, according to Valliere. He said he is unsure why exactly Westfield is being targeted.

Valliere is urging all residents to keep their vehicles locked and not to leave any valuables inside their vehicles.
