WESTFIELD – Motorists will be well advised to avoid Arch Road for the next two weeks while a construction crew works to improve drainage in the road.
The short road which begins at Southampton Road near the top of Clay Hill and continues until it merges with Lockhouse Road near the former Decorated Products building was closed during working hours yesterday and will continue to be closed to through traffic while the crew works.
Police officials report that the road will reopen for traffic at the end of each working day and close again the next morning when the construction crew returns to the job site.
The drainage project will include all of Arch Road, which slopes downhill from Southampton Road, and continue for a short distance on Lockhouse Road to the low point of the roadway which is about halfway between the intersection with Lockhouse Road and the turnpike overpass.
Residents of Forest Glen Apartments, workers at Arrow Gas and others who have reason to go to the area will need to pay close attention to the status of the roadwork which is expected to begin near the western end of the project and progress toward the east.
Motorists accustomed to traveling on Arch Road to get to Turnpike Industrial Park, Servistar Industrial Way or Hampden Village may be well advised to take an alternate route via Montgomery Road, Russellville Road and Cabot Road or via Root Road to reach their destinations.
Comments and concerns about the project may be addressed to city engineer Mark S. Cressotti at 572-6219 or via email at [email protected].
