WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School girls’ basketball team ran into a buzzsaw at home on Friday night.
Kirsy Segarra scored 19 points, and two others scored in double digits to lead visiting Holyoke past Westfield 67-40 Friday night.
Kaleight Kennedy (12 points) and Kari Paton (10) led Westfield, which fell to 1-6.
“It was not our finest effort,” Westfield coach Ralph Loos said. “We need to focus on the league. We can still get to 10 wins, or first or second in the league (to qualify for the postseason).”
Westfield, despite losing five of its first six games, had only lost by a grand total of 25 points entering Friday night’s game.
“It was just one of those games,” Loos said of the double-digit loss to Holyoke. “We have to turn the page to find the right combination of kids who have to lose.”

Jackie Maziarz scored a team-high eight points for Southwick (4-4), which dropped its Bi-County West League opener.
“Sci-Tech was well-scouted, we knew what was coming at us – we just didn’t step up,” Southwick coach Mike Gill said. “We’re still looking for some kids to step up.”
“We have to bounce back,” said Gill, whose team returns to action Tuesday against Holyoke Catholic.

Nadine Tran drained two early 3-pointers for Voc-Tech (2-4) before finishing with a team-high nine points.
“She set us on a good course, but we couldn’t hold on,” said Voc-Tech coach Matt Seklecki. The Tigers were outscored 14-9 in the fourth quarter. “They pulled away and sealed the deal.”
Voc-Tech’s Brandi VanGelder and Katie Nesmelova finished with six points apiece. The Tigers look to bounce back Monday against Gateway.

Gateway 40, Pathfinder 26
Brooke Fairman produced another double-double, scoring 11 points and hauling in 14 rebounds for Gateway, which improved to 5-2. Gators’ Chelsea Derrig finished with eight points.
Gateway led 18-8 at the half. The Gators next play at Westfield Voc-Tech Monday at 6 p.m.
