Saints open first; Bombers, Rams to follow

The Westfield Bombers split with the Amherst Hurricanes 1-1 during the high school baseball teams’ regular season meetings. On Monday, June 4, both teams will embark on a quest to win the tiebreaker, and advance further in the Division I tournament.
No. 4 Westfield (16-4) will host No. 5 Amherst (13-7) next week with the winner moving on to face No. 1 Cathedral (18-2). The St. Mary’s Saints (14-6), seeded seventh, will get the Whip City started Thursday when they host No. 10 Dean Tech (13-6) in a Division 3 first round game.
Times for both games are TBA.
The Division III field features a whopping 18 teams, and will require two teams to play on consecutive days.
In Division II, seventh-seeded Southwick-Tolland Regional (12-8) travels to No. 2 South Hadley (7-13), also on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
“I’m happy where we are,” Southwick-Tolland coach Tim Karetka said. “That’s not to say South Hadley is an easy task.”
The Terriers, who have a losing record, played a Division I schedule and won the majority of its D2 games.
“Our team is right where we need to be,” Karetka said. “We’re excited and happy to be there (in the postseason). We’re confident in ourselves. We’re healthy at the right time. We’re optimistic we can beat South Hadley. But they’re going to be a tough, tough team.”
